A stark look at Vietnam Veterans, the War and how We let Them down. This is a Call To Duty for everyone to thank your Veterans today, and a reminder to the media and politicians to value every soldier as if they were their own sons and daughters. Without a nation's support, soldiers cannot survive.

"Dusty" Earl Trimmer came down to see me in Columbus, Ohio in March 1968, just a couple days before he was scheduled to leave for Vietnam. I was at Ohio State University and living in the Delta Chi Fraternity House. At the time I thought that I was a little something just because I was pledge class president and a member of the Ohio State wrestling team...that was before I received letters from Nam, from Dusty...before he earned his many military medals/accolades. Then I saw how small I was in comparison...and how small some of my buddy All-Americans at other universities were in comparison to what Dusty and his Nam-mates were doing. I have known "Dusty" Earl Trimmer, who is the author of Condemned Property? Soldiers of the Vietnam War for over forty years. If I could only use three words to describe him, they would be: passionate, fearless, and straightforward. This description and more is why I recommend his book as "must reading" for anyone...veteran and non-veteran alike that wants greater insights into the truths about the Vietnam War, it's devastating aftermath, and how combat soldiers and those who love them are coping with both...today. I have read it twice. It will move you, teach you, motivate you and it may change you because you read it.

The art of being wise is knowing what to overlook.
A best of this weekend from last year when now Deputy Secretary of Defense Bob Work was between jobs.
When one hangs up the uniform after decades of service, but still wants to contribute to their nations national security needs, what paths can that take and what are the keys to success?
In a budgetary challenge not seen by the US military in two decades, what are the important "must haves" that need to be kept at full strength, and what "nice to haves" may have to be put in to the side?
What are the legacy ideas, concepts, and capabilities that the Navy and Marine Corps need to make sure they maintain mastery of, and what new things are either here or are soon on the way that we need to set conditions for success now?
Our guest for the full hour to discuss this and more will be Robert O. Work, Col. USMC (Ret), presently CEO of the Center for a New American Security (CNAS), and former Undersecretary of the Navy from 2009-2013.
After 27-years of active duty service in the Marine Corps, Work joined the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments (CSBA), where he focused on defense strategy and programs, revolutions in war, Department of Defense transformation, and maritime affairs. He also contributed to Department of Defense studies on global basing and emerging military missions; and provided support for the 2006 Quadrennial Defense Review.
During this time, Work was also an adjunct professor at George Washington University, where he taught defense analysis and roles and missions of the armed forces.
In late 2008, Work served on President Barack Obama’s Department of Defense Transition Team.
He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Illinois; and has Masters Degrees from the University of Southern California, the Naval Postgraduate School; and Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.

Good morning, today on The Meter we are having our popular open forum. In this format the listenerers set the agenda. The ongoing crisis with ISIS is becoming more precarious as Spetember 11 approaches and the revelation that more than 100 Americans have reportedly joined the terrorist group. Also, are we under a police state here at home? Police departments are equipped with some military style hardware and many feel this is unnecessary, referencing the aftermath of the recent police shooting of a black teenager by a white police officer in Ferguson, MO. Presdient Obama, wearing a new suit admits he has no strategy in dealing with ISIS. Sending the wrong message perhaps? Please join us at 10:00. The call in number is 714-242-6214. Obama said No Strategy on ISIL in Syria, refreshing
The mainstream media is hyperventilating again. The President says he does not yet have a strategy on ISIL, ISIS in Syria. Currently the American military is doing a masterful job of containing their expansion in Iraq that may affect “American interests.”
To simply go to all out war whether mostly by air would be just as irresponsible as Bush’s Iraq war was. It is wonderful to have a sane thoughtful President for a change.
