Cynthia Powell, Artistic Director and Conductor of Melodia Women's Choir, describes the stories and musical background behind "Windsong," Melodia's upcoming concert on November 22 and 23 in New York City. Featured in this concert of warm, lush music celebrating autumn are beautiful selections for women's voices by Franz Biebl, Gwyneth Walker, Gordon Jacobs, Reginald Unterseher, Edward Elgar, Alan Bullard, Ola Gjello, Richard Donovan, Ham Wessman and C. Armstrong Gibbs. Joining on the show will be award-winning pianist Tiasiya Pushkar, who will perform two works for piano, and Jennifer Clarke, Executive Director and founder of Melodia Women's Choir.
The two Windsong concerts are: Saturday, November 22 at 7:30 pm at Holy Apostles Church, 296, Ninth Avenue at 29th Street, in Chelsea; and November 23 at 3 pm at West End Collegiate church, 245 W. 77th Street at West End Avenue. In celebration of Melodia Women’s Choir's fifth season and the 100th anniversary of composer Olivier Messiaen's birth, the group will perform Messiaen's rarely-heard Trois petites liturgies and other works at a special May 16 concert in New York. Join Melodia founder/executive director Jennifer Clarke, artistic director/ conductor Cynthia Powell and guest artist Francoise Murail for a discussion of Messiaen's music and the upcoming concert program. In anticipation of concerts by Melodia Women's Choir on Nov 17 and Nov 18, 2012 in New York City, this special program shares the secrets of composing beautiful new works for women's voices.
The concert features the world premiere performance of "Questions About Angels" by Sally Lamb McCune, a work commissioned for this anniverary celebration. The composer joins Melodia's artistic director and conductor Cynthia Powell and executive director and singer Jennifer Clarke to describe the artistic process and power in performing new works.
Concert selections also feature Allison Sniffin's Punch! music arranged by Anonymous 4 and by Mediaeval Baebes! An event not to be missed!
Also joining the talented 26-member choir will be world renown marimba player Haruka Fujii, Barbara Merjan on percussion, Eleanore Oppenheim on bass, Wendy Powers on recorder, and Taisiya Pushkar on piano.

A fascinating conversation about women in music as Melodia Women's Choir kicks off its 8th season on Nov. 20 & 21 with "Timeless" classical works by Britten, Poulenc and "new classical" works by Joan Szymko and others. Sharing the delight of the music on this program will be Melodia's Conductor and Artistic Director Cynthia Powell and Executive Director Jennifer Clarke. Also joining will be Becca Stevens, whose commissioned composition, "Soli Deo Gloria," will receive its world premiere, part of the "Melodia Women Composers Spotlight." Melodia Women's Choir gives voice to the work of women composers in a special commissioning program. On November 14, 2009 in New York City, the choir will present the world premiere of a new commissioned work by Chris Lastovicka, winner of Melodia’s unique “Women Composer Commissioning Competition.” Lastovicka's new work is written for women’s voices, piano and strings, and features poems by the current Poet Laureate, Kay Ryan.
