Bryan Kest has been practicing yoga since 1979 and has been teaching since 1985. He developed his unique, distinctive style of yoga, Original Power Yoga, in 1979. Over the years, this style, an amazing workout for the body, mind and spirit, has made him a well-known, popular teacher across the country and around the world.
His mainstream popularity is matched by an authentic foundation in the ancient practice of yoga and a long path of development as a yogi (a practitioner of yoga). At age 15, Bryan uprooted from his native Detroit home to make a life change in Hawaii. He moved to live with his father, a doctor, who understood the benefits of yoga. Like many of us, Bryan originally thought yoga was nothing more than strange contortions, but that changed when his father introduced him to a physical style of yoga called Ashtanga. This appealed to him immediately, and he soon observed great changes in himself, both physically and mentally. Yoga quickly became his passion, one that would take him to India for a year to study with the great yoga masters of the world, PattabhiJois. He has been continuing on his yoga path ever since.

I missed Paulette Pike's Mudra meditation last week, so for the rest of April, I would like to explore the awakening and cleansing of our chakra for better relaxation, understanding and energetic influences upon our body.
Possible in June, I can find someone here who would be willing to lead us through a Mudra meditation. In lieu of that tune into Paulette Pike's radio show the Sound of Silence on the Unity Channel.
Join me this morning and start anew. This morning's meditation: A send off and an invitation. As we say goodbye to the love and black history month, let us attempt to keep both the curiousity and feelings of love throughout the rest of the year. To do that I am using an excerpt from Poet, Taneeka L. Wilder's poem Love Revisted.

NOTE: THERE IS A 1 MINUTE DELAY AFTER OPENING COMMERCIAL ENDS AND PROGRAM BEGINS. Keith Mitchell, a former Pro Bowl linebacker with the New Orleans Saints, talks about his journey from NFL star to a popular yoga and meditation teacher. At a New York yoga festival Mitchell reflected on his transformation. “That’s so different from where I’ve come from because normally when I’d journey to the East Coast and New York City I would not be bringing peace typically. We would come here to beat up on the New York Giants and New York Jets.”
While it may seem strange to see a retired NFL veteran leading an outdoor yoga festival, Mitchell’s journey to his current profession as a certified yoga and meditation instructor actually started with a very scary moment on the football field in 2003. In a Week Two game versus the Buffalo Bills, Mitchell, then playing for the Jacksonville Jaguars, ended up suffering a serious injury when making a tackle.
While he tried to briefly return to the field after the injury, Mitchell’s NFL career was done. Now living in Los Angeles, Mitchell gravitated to yoga and meditation more and more over the past decade as he sought a way to make peace with the physical and mental consequences of no longer being a football player.
“Unless you create a system of healing or working through it, it just gets bigger and bigger and it grows and manifests. The family that person gets involved with or the kids they have, they suffer.” Join us for Keith's triumphant story.
