Her incredibly comprehensive approach offers an informative and in-depth look at all that yoga has to offer.

Pick Your Yoga Practice explores seven of the most prominent approaches, plus ten “best of the rest,” in terms of what a class is like, the level of physical exertion involved, and the philosophical and spiritual underpinnings.  McCrary’s approach digs deeper than the physical descriptions of the practices to include everything from a style’s philosophical foundation and teaching methodology to what-to-expect and health benefits.

People, especially gym folks, love their Power Yoga. What most people don't realize is that Power Yoga is essentially Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga made American. She also talks shop on beginners, alignment and the importance of learning from a skilled teacher. She warns against jumping right into a full-on Power Yoga class and why yoga is different from any sport, workout, or physical activity: Just becuase you're a strong athlete doesn't mean yoga's going to be a breeze. in Health

Welcome to Everything Yoga – Smart, Simple and Straightforward with your host Meagan McCrary, yoga aficionado and author of “Pick Your Yoga Practice: Exploring and Understanding Different Styles of Yoga.” On a mission to give yoga a real voice from a practical perspective, she’s here today to set the story straight with the top three yoga myths.

Most of us in the U.S. have an idea of what yoga is, something to do with hot, sweaty classes, acrobatic poses and having the best booty ever, however, there is so much more to the vast, comprehensive tradition of yoga than the physical practice, known as hatha yoga. Meagan breaks down what yoga actually is and explains how the practice has evolved in modern culture. She also address the most common excuse for not practicing – I’m not flexible enough to do yoga – and why not all yoga is created equal.

If you thought yoga teachers were just spiritual hippies, all rainbows and butterflies, guess again. Meagan will prove to you why she and her collueges are some of the most knowledgable and educated professionals in the health and fitness industry.

Kate says: “I love having meaningful conversations with people about their love of life and what it means in relation to prayer and eradicating the fear of death. It makes me crazy how American society sweeps death away and no one speaks about it. This is why I’ve created the “Uprooting Our Fear Of Death: Bringing IT Out Of The Closet” webinar series, as well as “The Prayer Prescription Series,” and will be doing Teleseminars on these subjects in 2014.” Kate Loving Shenk, RN BSN

Meagan McCrary - Pick Your Yoga Practice

    in Health

Welcome to Everything Yoga: Smart, Simple & Straightforward with your host Meagan McCrary, giving yoga a real voice from a practical perspective.
L.A.-based yoga teacher and freelance writer, Meagan McCrary has immersed herself in the American yoga scene, taking classes, researching and interviewing prominent teachers for her upcoming book, “Pick Your Yoga Practice: Exploring and Understanding Different Styles of Yoga” (New World Library, 2014). Last Thursday's podcast featured a personal interview with Beryl Bender Birch, the author of "Power Yoga."
Today, Meagan follows up on a critical point Birch touched upon: The importance of attending a basics or introductory course before throwing yourself into a full-blown Power Yoga or Vinyasa Flow class. She'll explain why having a strong foundation is essential to a lasting yoga practice and the importance of biomechanically sound alignment. Drawing from her experiences teaching at Equinox, and what she sees going on in the yoga studio, Meagan will offer examples of how your yoga practice can actually cuase more harm than good when you don't know what your doing, and why "good alignment is good therapy."

Herself an alignment expert, she shares why holding the poses is benificial, along with her personal teaching style and what her classes are all about. Meagan also shares what she's noticed teaching yoga at Equinox, where the teachers are primarily vinyasa flow or power yoga, and some of her students' reactions.

Bottom line: American yoga has become as diverse as the Americans who practice it. There are a number of styles, hundreds of studios and thousands of teachers—not everyone is going to like every stye. But you don't know until you know, and Meagan is here to let you know what's available in ways of practicing yoga. She doesn't care where or what style you practice, just that you get in your bodies, start breathing and become present.
