Though he lived in the thirteenth century, Meister Eckhart’s deeply ecumenical teachings were in many ways modern. He taught about what we call ecology, championed artistic creativity, and advocated for social, economic, and gender justice. All these elements have inspired our Chi For Yourself guest, spiritual maverick Matthew Fox, and influenced his Creation Spirituality. In his latest book, Fox creates metaphorical meetings between Eckhart and Teilhard de Chardin, Thich Nhat Hanh, Carl Jung, Black Elk, Rumi, Adrienne Rich, and other radical thinkers. Matthew Fox is the author of "Meister Eckhart, A Mystic-Warrior for Our Times."

Matthew will discuss Meister Echhart (1260-1329) A Mystic Warrior for Our Times whose thinking/preaching was inalignment with the Beguines and the feminist and poet, Adrienne Rich.
Today Michael interviews Matthew Fox. Matthew (born 1940) is an American Episcopal priest and theologian. Matthew formerly a member of the Dominican Order within the Roman Catholic Church, he is now a member of the Episcopal Church. Fox was an early and influential exponent of a movement that came to be known as Creation Spirituality. The movement draws inspiration from the mystical philosophies of such medieval Catholic visionaries as Hildegard of Bingen, Thomas Aquinas, Saint Francis of Assisi, Julian of Norwich, Dante Alighieri, Meister Eckhart and Nicholas of Cusa, as well as the wisdom traditions of Christian scriptures. Creation Spirituality is also strongly aligned with ecological and environmental movements of the late 20th century and embraces numerous spiritual traditions around the world, including Buddhism, Judaism, Sufism, and Native American spirituality, with a focus on "deep ecumenism".
Fox has written 30 books that have sold millions of copies and by the mid-1990s had attracted a "huge and diverse following".
He was likened by academic theologians in one New York Times article to the controversial and influential 20th century Jesuit priest, philosopher and paleontologist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, particularly for his interpretations of issues such as the doctrine of original sin and the Cosmic Christ and for the resulting conflicts with church authorities.
Tonight we have a very special show with returning theologian, Matthew Fox and his co-author of Occupy Spirituality, Adam Bucko, discussing their new book. The Occupy Wall Street movement and protest movements around the world are evidence of a new era of intergenerational activists seeking deeper spiritual meaning in their quest for peace and justice. In Occupy Spirituality, authors Fox and Bucko advocate for homeless youth, explore a radical spirituality that is deliberately inter-faith and relevant to the world we live in today.
At the top of tonight's show, Prof. Anna Fedele, Visiting Fellow from the European University Institute in Florence and Research Fellow from Lisbon University Institute will discuss her new book, Looking for Mary Magdalene: Alternative Pilgrimage and Ritual Creativity at Catholic Shrines in France. Sacred sites of Mary Magdalene, if she was really Jesus' wife and why the Church insisted on labeling her a prostitute will be discussed.
Crossing the threshold into the second half of the show, the noted Episcopal Minister, Matthew Fox, long ago excommunicated by the Vatican for his views on feminist spirituality and work with Native Americans, will discuss his book, The Pope's War and we'll delve into the various scandals in the church from their connection to the CIA, their involvement in sabotaging liberation theology, the Church's child molestation problem and of course, the new Pope.
Have you ever been confronted by real injustice, the kind that can change your life forever?
When Child Protective Services showed up at the house of Houston native Wayland Matthew Fox in March 2006, his life changed forever. Fox learned that he was being falsely accused of a horrible crime. It would be the beginning of a trial that left Fox in jail for 17 months, though there was no tangible evidence. It's a charge that Fox has always maintained was completely false, and this assertion was supported by numerous professional evaluations. He was eventually exonerated, but not before he was sentenced to 10 years in prison and his life, and family, were thrown into utter chaos. To keep his sanity Fox wrote in his journal. His appeal was eventually upheld on the grounds of prosecutorial violations during his trial and all charges were subsequently dropped, his sentence was reversed, his record expunged and Fox was freed in January 2010.
His book, First in the Mind and Heart - A true story about the resilience of the human spirit, is a compilation of Fox's prison writings. It's a tale of human endurance in the face of gross injustice. It reveals the effectiveness of human love, peace and kindness and how the Spirit of God illuminates even the darkest of conditions and can soften even the hardest of hearts.
Wayland Matthew Fox is a native Texan and a long time student of The Urantia Book. He has a huge extended family of friends and loved ones across the US. He spends a great deal of time writing letters to lift the spirits of the downtrodden, who find themselves incarcerated. His story is a powerful memorial of how wrongful convictions happen and the consequences they wreak. It's a story of injustice, grief and moral outrage as well as transcendence, lessons of love, service and self-forgetfulness, as taught by the Master, Jesus of Nazareth.
