    THE MASONIC SECRET

    in Lifestyle

Aren't you the least bit curious?  Of course. It's a fraternity 300 years old and going. No frat party. No male testosterone and alcohol driven embarrassment to themselves.  But august; philanthropic. Authentic and dignified. Striving with piety answerable to common sense; endorsing equality and liberty of humanity; mystery; private and secret to protect it from populist verdicts; signs of greetings known to few; real.

Even we wonder how and why, don't you? What is it that a man finds in masonry that he can't find anywhere else?  Not fame or fortune. Leadership becomes service to mankind but how does that endure?

If you wonder what it is, the best I can  tell you is that it is a feeling.  The one we experience when truth finds us. Not being smarter; not hubris, not arrogant or smug. When a person  'sees' what others do not, in a world so frightened and mistrustful, those truths are a weighty responsibility. That is what we call humility. Our task is to find balance in life and live in that state and the universe unfolds.

When a person has matured enough to take herself or himself seriously, when he understands himself, masonry  opens the mind, the spirit, the heart. Every ending is the beginning of something next.

    SECRETS WITHIN THE CRAFT

    in Lifestyle

In the Tutor period, alchemists practiced their arts. To this day, we know scientists are protective and secretive about their work. Across Canada, the scientific community has been targeted for a decade by the current federal government pushing an ideological agenda. But think back to the tutor period and governments had less leverage and more obfuscation with those pesky alchemicalists.   They did and did not keep their work secret.  Yes, they did not want others to replicate their findings. This is from the same protectionist thinking that gave rise to passwords and signs of recognition about operative masons. The alchemist had to keep track of his work which he did by developing and writing in code.  Dyspher the code- follow the research.

Within the Craft we have often heard what I like to think of as the declaration of the uninformed. We are not a secret society, but we do have secrets.  There are 27,000 languages in use on this blue globe orbiting our star. We happen to use an obscure langage to keep track of our work.  Study the language for yourself. The information becomes obvious.   A mason with a loose waggy tongue can't be of much use. The 'rosetta' stone to translate these glyphs has yet to be found.  Isn't it curious that alchemists have continued to practice and no one sees fit to indict.

To all those who cannot control their emotion, you will look for an apology for the frustration this causes to blindly rage around the lodge.  So here is a bone;  if you desire what alchemists seek, if you can commit, if you have the ability to go beyond your familiar logical mind, find a book about the Khabbalah.  If your mind is settled enough to know that the alchemists secrets are anything but the revelation of truths- the path may open.

POINTING OUT THE MYSTERY TO A MASON

    in Lifestyle

Profane might rarely experience what a mason experiences whether together or after making his way home. Being true to his obligations, he exists in a constant state of vigilence. How can that be you say? How can anyone be aware every moment of every day?   The secret isn't so secret once you know it- but here it is-  It is likeing learning to have a bag full of goals. Some are short term, some are small, others are life goals and consume great energy. To be vigilent is to be mindful of what goal you are capturing in that moment. This is what we call awareness- enjoying what we do.

If freemasonry has secrets, this is one out there for all to see; in a sense hidden in public until a passerby notices and begins to connect. We've made mistakes trying to understand what to do with it.We have manners that guard us against that.  Where we get blind sided is dealing with the illusion.  The illusion is about a quiet nature.  While brethren are preoccupied analyzing to understand, they may appear aloof, haughty.

MASONRY: FROM CULT RELIGION INTO A CULTURE MODERN

    in Lifestyle

Declaring that masonry offers a non-secular option to faith has wrapped the Craft in a lingering, misguided myth.  Think about it. If Freemasonry is the epitome of Renaisance thinking, would it not have a bearing on the masonic mind?   Saying that masonry is complicated doesn't take much effort.  Yes, it's a mess. Yes our writings are disorganized.  Yes, we don't know how to locate the best Masonic mentors  scholars. Yes we lack bone fide readings. Yes the disorder is growing.  When we decide it is important to ensure that the basic core learning is available to a Brother we will get around to it. Or will we?  We should probably do more than wait.  We should probably build accessible study rooms, organize collections and a place to gather, to read, to learn, to contemplate meaning.

Andrew Hammer published a thoughtful little book- Observing the Craft, in which he extols us to be forthright about our obligations and stay active in Lodge. He said we  were straying off in all directions.  Some truth in that as far as he took it.  Rather than describing a problem, I thought he gave us a list of symptoms.  Everything is secondary to our primary goal, enlightenment. Searchers are looking for options going through the versions of masonry. Maybe masonry is essentially about exposing bright minds to great ideas. What Br Hammer didn't consider was the next path opening in front of us.  If bricks and mortar masonry can't deliver, the internet will.  Colloquial no more, masonry has evoled on its own, into a network built to convey ideas using a network built to communicate ideas. Can I resist that gravity?

    There are Secrets!

    in Spirituality

Do you realize that there are secrets that God wants to reveal to us? Can you handle the secret?  There is a level of maturity that is needed in this season and today we will talk about it.

1Corinthians 2:6 Now we do speak wisdom among the mature, but not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are perishing.7 Instead we speak the wisdom of God, hidden in a mystery, that God determined before the ages for our glory.8 None of the rulers of this age understood it. If they had known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

THINGS THAT COAX US TOWARD TRUTH

    in Lifestyle

Notes and rhythms can take us to places in our minds where we can find peace within.

Freemasonry tantalizes. It is so generous it allows a man to adopt a pedigree made of noble ideas and magnificent gestures. Speculation becomes permissible and we discover far too late to do anything about it, that our mind has been opened to knowing how much we don't really know afterall.  It is opportunity to mingle with like-minded men and for lessons in tolerance. Always the challenge that we are capable of better, in pursuit of symmetry.

If this is the form of freemasonry that has been so evasive, then square yourself to harsh honesty and question the accuracy of what you perceive is real.

Masonic Exchange tackles the ideas that are masonry. Please join us.
