The Potential of Music Festivals to Build Community

    in Non-Profit

When Gallup and the Knight Foundation set out to answer the question “What attaches people to their communities?” they found that the key reasons cited by residents for loving their cities were entertainment and social offerings, how welcoming the city is and its aesthetics — in other words, the arts and culture.  That finding was not news to Alderman Michael Scott, Jr., or his wife Natashee.  The couple have been patrons of the arts for years.  In an effort to build community and make North Lawndale a destination for arts and entertainment, the Scotts started the annual Westside Musical Festival, which will run again on August 20 2016.

Join Natashee and Michael Scott, Jr. as they share lessons learned in developing the festival. We will discuss ways the Westside Music Festival is being used to build community; develop a sense of place for North Lawndale and to spur economic development and tourism.

The Catholic Geek: John C Wright's Iron Chamber of Memory

    in Books

Author John C Wright will join host Declan Finn to discuss his latest fantasy novel, "Iron Chamber of Memory.  With luck we might get him to talk about the Hugos, Sad Puppies, or maybe even a little bit about Rad Puppies.  Just a thought.

John C. Wright is a retired attorney, newspaperman and newspaper editor, who was only once on the lam and forced to hide from the police who did not admire his newspaper.

In 1984, Graduated from St. John's College in Annapolis, home of the "Great Books" program. In 1987, he graduated from the College and William and Mary's Law School (going from the third oldest to the second oldest school in continuous use in the United States), and was admitted to the practice of law in three jurisdictions (New York, May 1989; Maryland December 1990; DC January 1994). His law practice was unsuccessful enough to drive him into bankruptcy soon thereafter. His stint as a newspaperman for the St. Mary's Today was more rewarding spiritually, but, alas, also a failure financially. He presently works (successfully) as a writer in Virginia, where he lives in fairy-tale-like happiness with his wife, the authoress L. Jagi Lamplighter, and their four children: Pingping, Orville, Wilbur, and Just Wright.

The Heart Healer: Ultimate Self-Care Survival Guide

    in Spirituality

Today we are rebroadcasting an amazing interview that Boma Akainy, writer and author of the book "The Heart Healer"  conducted with Positively Affirmative Radio in 2014.  Boma is a powerful, inspirational and heart centered speaker with a timeless message of hope and redemption that cuts across culture, race, class, and age.

Boma states "my name is Boma Akainy and I live in Maryland.  As a citizen of the United States and having lived most of my teenage years in Nigeria, my eyes saw more than I could be comfortable with.  So I took it personal.  My mission is to help people from all walks of life do better in any circumstances, or  situations and outcomes through sharing mind changing information.

I want to hopefully help inspire women to stay strong.  I want people to look at me and say because of you...I was able to forgive others.

I want people to look at me and say that because of you, I was able to let go of that abusive relationships.  The easiest thing in the world is to give up, but hold it together, that's true stregnth and the inspiration came from my own stregnth.

Hoping that my shameful past will be a blessing to others.

If I can make a difference in one person's life, then that's success for me".

    ....Boma Akainy
