R.I.P. Hot 97? Funkmaster Flex v. Jay Z? Classic Hip Hop on FM?

    in Hip Hop Music

NOTE: We'll be paying respect to ASAP Yams on tonight's show as well, and talking about the Jay-Z/Hot 97 purchase rumor. The following was written before all that.

    Hip hop radio.

It's a topic we've touched on before, paricularly in regards to New York's iconic Hot 97 and their lack of support for local artists, or the hip hop community at large.

Hot 97 remains at the center of the discussion, in part because of their iconic status, but also in part because of their stubborn insistence that they be considered the "voice" of hip hop, even though much of their actions point in the opposite direction, and are even hurtful to the music and culture that made them what they are.

We'll talk biting the hip hop hand that feeds them, and what might be going on at the station. A flurry of high profile and loyal departtures, new, out-of-town personnel with little to no hip hop radio experience, and a heated on-area airing out of Jay Z by once-prominent Funkmaster Flex has many of us who watch the industry perplexed.

Is Hot 97 on the verge of a complete collapse, format switch, or something else entirely unexpected? Will they ever be more than a typical 2015 rap radio station that plays a forumlaic playlist and doesn't take any responsibility for helping to negatively affect the music and culture that made many of them rich?

Perhaps they'll fall off completely and change to the radio "format of the day," classic hip hop! It's a format that many stations are rushing to change to, but our show host Manny Faces feels it's actually bad for hip hop, and likely to fail.

Feel free to call with your thoughts. Do you listen to Hot 97? What do you think is missing, if anything? Are you an old-school head? Are you excited about the classic format idea?

Tune in and participate. It's NY's hip hop talk radio, and it's all about YOU!

WHAT IS PRECIOUS COMES AS UNEXPECTED! SUDDENLY!

    in Religion

The scriptures relate the conscience of the Savior revealed to be one that present social status quo is not prepared to discern to esteem the preciousness of His message.  Shamefully, the very rulers men have trusted have all in treacherous manner been a fatally flattering blinding influences catering to all manner of stagnating self-righteousness.  Global society as a whole today has so avoided the real issues at hand necessary unto our salvation for many generations; that when at last again these issues are addressed, almost none at first will be found to have a clue so to understand, believe, perceive to act upon he massive importantance of His report. (Zephaniah 2:15-3:6>-13, Isaiah 28:1-<10-22, 50:1-5,Luke 17:20-<26-18:8) (Psalms 14, 53, .. Isaiah 59) (Zech.12:10)

Isa 52:13  Behold!  MY Servant shall deal PRUDENTLY, He shall be EXALTED and EXTOLLED, and be very high.   14  And many will be astonished at Him.  For His VISION was much more REVOLUTIONARY than any man, and his CONSCIENCE more than the sons of MEN:   15  So shall He sprinkle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at Him: for that which had not been told them shall they see; and that which they had not heard shall they consider.   Isa 53:1  Who then has believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?  2  For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground.   He has no FORM nor COMELINESS; and when we shall see Him, there is NO BEAUTY that we should desire Him.  3  HE IS DESPISED and REJECTED of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from Him.   He was DESPISED, and WE ESTEEMED HIM NOT.  4  Surely He hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet WE ESTEEMED HIM STRICKEN, smitten of YAH, and afflicted.

Alvin and Calvin Almond - Exclusive Interview -Thurs, Jan 22, 2015 - 7:00 PST

    in Music

Alvin and Calvin Almond was born in the deep south of Virginia. Growing up in the era of Segregation, the identical twins started their music career at a early age of eight years of age. They traveled the southern chittling circuit throughout high school dancing and being known as the little James Browns Twins. Folks would come from all over to witness the magical JB moves that they performed. Playing saxophones and fooling people were very exciting for the twins. Even taking our show as we attended Morgan State University in Baltimore Md. Although being the youngest of five boys, we always kept that twinship even to this day. Doing our Lil James Brown routines and learning from his songs that taught us lifes values. We witnessed him several times live but never imagined that we were on a course that would one day bring us into Mr. Browns life as his godsons. Knowing that we must leave the south, we ventured some three thousand miles to California against our Mothers wishes as we were her baby twins. It was in 1979 that we ventured across the country to find that pot of Gold they say was waiting there. By this time, we found a deep sense of spiritual self and gave our lives to God. That alone would save our life and prepare us for LaLa land. We changed our music message about Gods love as we kept our James Brown Funky sound. Way ahead of the Kirk Franklin and J Moss plus others years later. Being Identical Twins, we had no problems getting into plenty record deals. Capital, Solar, Motown plus others. The only catch was that we would conform to secular music. That we refused. Even Mr. Joe Jackson invited us into his private office and enticed us to sign with his company if we would change our gospel soul style. Motown, which we loved offered the same. Mr. Fuller Gordy, Berry Gordys brother took us under his wings and taught us well. He said Twins!!!
