    Retail's Lost Future: Manhattan Taxes, Rents, Requirements and the Internet

    On June 3, my guests will be Nancy Ploeger, president of the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce, and Robert S. Schwartz, C. Ped, president and CEO of Eneslow Pedorthic Enterprises, Inc, which operates Eneslow, The Foot Comfort Center, Eneslow Pedorthic Institute (EPI) and www.eneslow.com.  We will be discussing the future of retail in Manhattan in light of Borough taxes, rents and requirements, as well as the impact of the Internet.


    Eneslow, which was founded in 1909, has provided over 100,000 pairs of free shoes for the needy.  EPI, which opened in 1995 as an educational institute, offers courses on conservative foot care, foot health and overall wellbeing.  Additionally, it conducts events on the art and science of pedorthics and how it relates to improving people's lives. Eneslow trains third year podiatry students at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine, where Robert serves as an adjuct instructor in the department of Orthopedic Sciences. In 2009 Eneslow was named "Retailer of the Year" by the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce.  The following year Robert was named "Corporate Hero" by the New York Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation and in 2012 he was recognized by Tender Care Human Services for his generosity. We will be discussing Customer Retention.

    Crime Stats in Manhattan - Interview with Peter Christiansen

    Our guests this morning are Andrew Werts from Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center and Steve Allison from Street Food Cinema.


    Andrew Werts received his BA in Psychology from Gettysburg College and his MSBA from San Francisco State University. Andrew has spent the last 15 years of his career working in the marketing and advertising field and is currently the Director of Marketing and Communications at Providence Little Company of Mary Torrance and San Pedro Medical Centers. Andrew is also on the executive leadership counsel for the American Heart Association in the South Bay. He is a long time South Bay resident and enjoys spending time with his family and friends.


    Steve Allison began his career as a writer, adapting the novel “A Kind of Warfare” into a screenplay for the English Film Council. He has two projects in development with Malcolm Venville directing that are his original screenplays. Steve’s credited feature films are “Love is the Drug” staring Lizzy Caplan  and Darryl Hannah and “Privileged” staring Nicky Reed. 


    This morning we’re going to hear about Manhattan Movie Nights, sponsored by Little Company of Mary and produced by Street Food Cinema. The first movie will be screened on Saturday, August 29 at Manhattan Beach Marriot golf course.

    Our guests this morning are Laura Fischer, Suzanne Sharer and Linda Merlo,  all members of the Neptunian Women’s Club of Manhattan Beach


    Laura Fischer is the owner of Q Factor International Inc. Laura helps people create a path to make their "someday" dreams happen today.  She is a strategic coach for successful, yet overwhelmed, business women who want to make a big life transition or make a change in an area of their life that is not functioning optimally. 


    Linda Merlo was born in Pasadena and moved to Manhattan Beach in 2010. She has been involved with philanthropy work for over 20 years and has been an associate of the Neptunian Woman's Club for 4 years. Linda served on the Board for 2 years as Financial Secretary is currently beginning her first year as President. In her free time, Linda can be found at her cabin fishing on Lake Mary in Mammoth Lakes.


    Suzanne Sharer is a 15 year resident of Manhattan Beach, originally from Tenafly, NJ and a graduate of Mount Holyoke College. Suzanne is a business owner and sits on the Board of The Neptunian Woman's Club of Manhattan Beach as the Vice-President of Fundraising and has held this position for several years. In addition, Suzanne has been a fundraiser for 30 years with organizations such as Make-A-Wish and APLA and currently serves on the Advisory Board for Walk With Sally. Her passions are music, her three rescue dogs, dance and spending time with her husband, family and friends.


    This morning, we’re going to find out what the mission of the Neptunian Women’s Club is and the role they play in the community.

    Manhattan Beach Chamber Events

    We have a couple of returning guests this morning, Jill Brunkhardt from Chevron and Nancy Vrankovic from the Simm’s Group.


    Jill Brunkhardt has been a Public Affairs Representative at the Chevron El Segundo Refinery since September 2006. She’s very active in the community and currently sits on the board of directors for the Manhattan Beach Chamber of Commerce, Manhattan Beach Botanical Garden, Redondo Beach Chamber of Commerce and several other organizations.


    Nancy Vrankovic is the Director of Catering and Special Events for Simms Restaurants, a relatively new company based in Manhattan Beach with a rich family history in the restaurant business.  She began her career in her family’s restaurants in Arizona as a teen, bussing tables to make gas money.  What began as an after school job blossomed into a career when she began managing a restaurant while attending the University of Arizona. She then worked at the Westin la Paloma where she worked her way up to Catering Sales Manager.


    Our guests are on the Manhattan Beach Chamber Executive Board and this morning, we’re going to talk about the different Chamber events that are scheduled for the rest of the year.

    What’s New at the Manhattan Beach Chamber

    This morning we’re going to be chatting with the staff of the Manhattan Beach Chamber: President and CEO James O’Callaghan, Director of Business Development Valeria Salazar and Event Coordinator Laura Reed.


    James comes to Manhattan Beach from Venice Visitor, Venice’s first destination marketing organization at which he served as Executive Director. Previously, he served as Director of Visitor Services for LA Inc. and the Los Angeles Convention and Visitors Bureau. As Chamber President and CEO, 


    The Manhattan Beach Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce the addition of Valeria Salazar as the new Business Development Director. Valeria will focus on developing key partnerships for the organization, enabling them to deliver many of the outstanding programs members have come to expect.  In addition, she will strive to enhance and grow the member experience. 


    Laura Reed is the Event Coordinator for the Manhattan Beach Chamber of Commerce. She has been with the chamber since March of this year and was previously employed by various companies within the hospitality industry in southwest Florida. In 2013, Laura graduated from Florida Gulf Coast University where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management specializing in Event Management. She relocated to the Los Angeles area in May of 2014 and has since fallen in love with the SoCal lifestyle! Laura will be joining us at the half hour.


    This morning, our guests are going to fill us in on what’s new and fabulous at the MB Chamber!
