Being part of a religious community has its benefits, in terms of identity, beliefs, and a clear distinction between yourself and those who are "outsiders." What is it like growing inside a powerful religious organization that is feared by the government? How does your life change when your father is martyred, and becomes a larger than life historical figure? How does that affect your sense of purpose in life? How does that affect the friendships and personal relationships you form? How do you help people to see you the person and not you the symbol of whatever people perceive your father, mother, and religious organization to be? Is it possible to have a personal relationship with someone who is outside of the religious structure that shaped your identity? Ilyasah Shabazz, shares her story in the book "Growing Up X"

Chris interviews Karl Evanzz again for the 1st time in 20 years. Evanzz of course is a highly-important author & researcher best-known for his books "The Judas Factor: The Plot to Kill Malcolm X," and "The Messenger: The Rise and Fall of Elijah Muhammad." On today's show he goes deeper by revealing for the first time all 3 of his shooters, including the one who fired the shot that is believed to have ended his life; William Bradley, the shotgun assassin.
Evanzz has just released a new documentary called "They Shot Malcolm X." Blackcommentator ran both his article and the film last week. Other books Evanzz has written are "Dancing With the Devil as a ghostwriter, and the Wilma Chestnut Story (you can order 3 of these from Amazon on the preceding links). Evanzz is a retired journalist for the Washington Post.

Malcolm X's and Dr. Betty Shabazz's middle daughter Ilyasah Shabazz graciously delivered her donated books, "Malcolm Little: The Boy Who Grew Up to Become Malcolm X" to the school that banned her father from a list of notable African American Heroes.
After searching her roots for the truth about her father's upbringing, influences and inspirations ilyasah penned the children's illustrated book with A.G. Ford. ilyasah spoke about her book and gave an inspirational talk to an assembly of little children, encouraging them to let their roots, their parents' life lessons guide them throughout their lives.

Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis' grandson, Filmmaker Muta' Ali talks to host @ShellieGaines about his heartfelt documentary, based on his grandparents' Love, Life & Activism, on The Gist of Freedom www.BlackHistoryBLOG.com Special Thank you to @DashonFarad of Arise for your contribution!
The grandson of actress Ruby Dee is mourning the loss of his famous grandmother and releasing a new documentary about her extraordinary life.Compiled by The Gist of Freedom from NY1's Cheryl Wills report.
The film follows Ruby from her early childhood to her acting career when she declared that she would NEVER portray a maid or a mammy and how she was anxious to get her signature role in "A Raisin In The Sun."
The riveting documentary about Ruby Dee was released Sunday just days after her death. The film is called "Life's Essentials with Ruby Dee" and her grandson, Muta'Ali, is the director. He says he watched his grandmother pass away peacefully.
"We were all there around her bed in her room when it happened. And my mother told me that she told her as she was transitioning that everything is alright," says Muta'Ali.
"I'm hoping though that today's generation or younger than me even can get a glimpse into Ossie and Ruby that they haven't had before," says Muta'Ali.
