    in Lifestyle

Malana Ashlie was born in a garage in Akron, Ohio. Of her five brothers only the youngest -twins- were born in the same place. Vagabond tendencies are in her blood. Her first book, "Gringos in Paradise: Our Honduras Odyssey" was meant to journal the adventures (and misadventures) of transitioning from sheltered US living into the lesser developed country of Honduras. When the book won a first place award it set a new course for her life.

Politics Done Right - Is welfare for the rich the same as welfare for the poor?

    in Politics

Today I will be exploring whether welfare for the rich has the same implications as welfare for the poor. Last night Bill Maher said the following.

"Republicans are right," Bill Maher said "Not having to work and getting free money does mess people up. That's why they love to talk about work, the virtue of work, the right to work, workfare, the dignity that comes with work.

In fact there is only one thing conservatives believe in more than work. And that is the God given right of rich people to leave all their money to their kids so they never have to work a day in their lives. ...

I mean think about it. Republicans are on board with taxing people's income, their investments, property, food, gas, booze, cigarettes, everything you buy, even your retirement. Those are all OK. But the one thing that must remain tax free is when money falls from the sky and lands in the lap of [explicative] Hilton. ...

If the tough love of cutting off free money for the poor is the right thing to do how can we stand by and do any less for the Conrad Hiltons of the world. They've never known the dignity of work either. Shouldn't we be helping them by taxing inheritance at one hundred percent?"

Politics Done Right - We must have open dialogue on difficult issues

    in Politics Progressive

This week I stepped into it big time. I made the following post on the Coffee Party USA Facebook page.

The reaction was mostly negative towards the post. I received threats by message and emails. What did I do wrong? I had the gall to call out Bill Maher using a nuanced and to some extent condescending tone to point out why his rigid stance on Muslims was neither correct or helpful. Since the person that killed the three students claimed he was an atheist I was trying to see if empathy would reign base on how some would attempt to vilify all atheists for the act.

The reaction was to make no attempt to understand that I was on the side of most that were slamming me with the expectation that there would be some introspection. Anyway, this is what we will discuss on Politics Done Right today.

Islamophobia, xenophobia and lack of accountability in the Atheist Community

    in Atheism

Please join us Sunday 10AM CST as we discuss the hate crime that took place this week.  For those unaware, three Muslim students were murdered over an alleged parking dispute.  The murderer entered the home of the students and killed them execution style.  The media and police are hesitant to call it a hate crime.  The atheist community are attempting to distance themselves from this matter.  I am seeing 'No True Scotsman' fallacies everywhere.

I find it interesting that when it's a white person, they are judged as individuals. People are claiming that this domestic terrorist was mentally ill and a lone wolf.  However, people of color are judged as groups and made accountable for the actions of individuals.  This double standard has been prevalent in this community.

We will discuss how the atheist community has created and cultivated a toxic environment.  We have been calling this community out about the Islamophobia, racism, sexism, homophobia, etc.; yet, it has not been addressed.  The mainstream atheist organizations have ignored the warning signs and have even attempted to make excuses for the bigotry.

We spoke about this matter extensively on our TwitterChat and you can find more details here.  We want to continue this much needed discussion.  There will b more discussion on this in the future.

The #PascoShooting Death of Antonio Zambrano-Montes

    in News

This week a viral video from Pasco, Washington, captured the death of Antonio Zambrano-Montes at the hands of Pasco police. Zambrano-Montes' death has made national and global news, even getting discussed Friday night on Bill Maher. Tonight, we speak with Rick Rios, a LR contributor and a member of Pasco's Consejo Latino, a group working with the Zambrano-Montes family. Rick will not only share real on-the-ground updates from the case, but he will also provide deeper context into the strained community relations between police and Pasco's residents.
