Beyond the Airwaves Episode #149 -- Power Rangers Dark Film and Copyright Issues

    in Entertainment

This is Beyond the Airwaves: The Infinity Project, where we go beyond the mainstream media and tackle issues that don't seem so important to the major networks.

In the course of the past week, many people have seen a YouTube video for Power Rangers fan-made film with James Van Der Beek and Katee Sackhoff. The 15-minute movie is filled with vulgar language, gore, and incredible violence. Saban Capital Group managed to get it down because of copyright infringement. Less than 24 hours after it was pulled, though, the video's creator changed some wording and got it back up. We'll discuss the issues of copyright laws and infringement not only for this film but also other videos pulled because of these copyright laws. The entire hour will be devoted to the copyright debate.

Silly, Messy Humans: ¨Slut: A Documentary Film¨ by Emily Lindin

    in Current Events

Imagine you’re eleven years old and labelled the school ¨slut.¨ Where would you turn? What would you do? Emily Lindin turned to her diary, chronicling each and every damaging event. More than a decade later Emily published these entries online and founded The Unslut Project. Devastated by the suicides of Rehtaeh Parsons, Amanda Todd, and Audrie Pott, Emily sought to provide some perspective to girls – more than a decade after her experiences - who currently feel trapped and ashamed.

And now, Emily is producing ¨Slut: A Documentary Film.¨ This film will tell the stories of girls who took their own lives because of sexual bullying, and feature the opinions of respected sexologists, psychologists, and media figures to explore how we can all work toward a world where the word "slut" doesn't even make sense as an insult.

Join us on this special broadcast date to learn more about Emily, her film, and how you can help bring its much needed messages to communities everywhere.
