Dr. Scott Barry Kaufman: Your child can be more than his test scores

    in Psychology

Amy Alkon's Advice Goddess Radio: "Nerd Your Way To A Better Life!" with the best brains in science.

On this show, a "Best Of" replay, cognitive psychologist Dr. Scott Barry Kaufman lays out why intelligence tests currently used are far too limiting in determining a student’s true potential.

Kaufman is a rigorous researcher whose work I know and respect, but his new book, UNGIFTED: Intelligence Redefined, offers much more than science. It offers inspiration in Kaufman’s own story as a “late listener” (due to a spate of ear infections) who was put into learning disabled classes. And then, in 9th grade, through sheer determination, pushed his way into a gifted kids’ class -- ultimately going on to Yale, getting a Ph.D., then going on to become a young professor at NYU.

On this show, we’ll discuss the limitations of current testing and a host of other things that matter in whether a child succeeds and how Scott thinks we would better assess talent, creativity, and “the many paths to greatness.”

Highly recommended."

  • Gilbert House Fellowship #11 -- Job 32-37

    in Paranormal

We continue our study of the Book of Job beginning with chapter 32.  Job's friends, Eliphaz, Zophar, and Bildad have run out of things to say, Job has exhausted his defense, and so today we meet a new character in this drama.

Elihu, a young man who has apparently been watching and listening to his elders as they debate the reasons for Job's trials, launches into a monologue about the nature of God and Job's error in declaring himself righteous.  All this sets up the appearance of Yahweh Himself.

As Sharon will be away playing a role in a childrens’ Christmas play at church, Josh Peck, host of The Sharpening and author of Quantum Creation, joins us to help us in our study.  We appreciate his heart, mind, and joyful spirit, and we thank him for being willing and able to assist.

The webcast goes live Sunday morning at 10:30 AM Central Standard Time (UTC -6).

Helen Weng: The Science of Compassion

    in Relationships

Compassion is a key motivator of altruistic behavior, but little is known about individuals’ capacity to cultivate compassion through training.

Now, through a recent scientific study, we've learned that it's possible to become a more compassionate person by training your brain.

Researchers from the Center for Investigating Healthy Minds at the University of Wisconson-Madison's Waisman Center found that engaging in compassion meditation -- where you practice feeling compassion for different groups of people, including yourself -- seemed to increase a sense of altruism.

"It's kind of like weight training," study researcher Helen Weng, a graduate student in clinical psychology at the university, said in a statement. "Using this systematic approach, we found that people can actually build up their compassion 'muscle' and respond to others' suffering with care and a desire to help."

Helen Weng is our guest this week on the Voice of Leadership, sharing more about this study and our ability to become more compassionate human beings.

Episode 28: Adonis Stevenson Returns to the Ring

    in Sports

This weekend marks the return of the Superman, Adonis Stevenson as he squares off against Dmitry Sukhotsky. With all of the chaos surrounding Stevenson's alleged dodging of Sergey Kovalev, Adonis has much to prove in his second and final fight of 2014.

Former top prospect and current top ten super middleweight Andre Dirrell looks to continue his rise through the 168 pound division as he takes on Derek Edwards. Perhaps the most intriguing fight of the night features the heavy-hitting super prospect Artur Beterbiev as he looks to extend his knockout streak while working towards an inevitable clash with top dogs Adonis Stevenson and fellow countryman Krusher Kovalev who sit atop the mountain of light heavyweight supremacy.

Jay-Z has officially entered the fight game with the announcement of his first production dubbed,"Throne Boxing," on January 9th at Madison Square Garden. The event will be headlined by Washington, D.C. area native and welterweight prospect Dusty Harrison.

All of this and much more on a special preview edition of the Tale of the Tape boxing podcast.
