I have done several shows about Lymphedema and the grassroots efforts to get the Lymphedema Treatment Bill passed. This one came from an original airing of 5/1/10.
"Back in March, we had a show introducting you to the HR 4662 which involves the improvement for health care costs for lymphedema patients. Please join us again today to learn what has been done, what you can do, and what this means to you if you (or someone you know) has lymphedema. We need to get this bill passed in this year's legislation session. We will have Jennifer and Jenny on our show, as well as some other pertinent people that can add more to enlighten about this very important bill." http://www.blogtalkradio.com/oralhistory/2010/05/01/beyond-words-live--understanding-hb-4662
BEYOND WORDS LIVE is designed as a platform for survivors to tell their own stories in their own words.
For more information see http://facebook.com/LymphedemaInTheNews or http://lymphedematreatmentact.org/.
Dr. Stanley Rockson (of Stanford University Medical School) states that: "Lymphedema is a common disease. Approximately 10 million Americans, for example, have lymphedema secondary to breast and pelvic cancer therapy, recurrent infections, injuries, or vascular surgery." (2010) Imagine, if there were approximately 10 million Americans then, how many more there are now in 2014 (knowing that there is no cure for it as it stands to date)?
For many years, I had key advocates come on my show to discuss various cases and, especially, the aspects of advocating in the legislature. On January 27th, Heather Ferguson (one of those advocates) will come on my show to discuss some updates on those legislative issues being presented.
Today, though, I will open the mic up to patients, advocates, and caregivers especially to tell their stories on how Lymphedema has affected them. We will then share this with legislators to personally hear the many stories typical to illustrate the pervasiveness of this condition.
Please mark your calendars and join us on March 6th at 10a CST to share and/or be better informed about these issues.
Tiffany Howe was born with Primary Congenital Lymphedema (Milroy’s Disease). After 27 years of struggling with this ailment, she was given a choice of losing her left leg or undergoing the Charles Debulking procedure. The choice was difficult and very challenging to make. She chose the Charles Debulking procedure and could not have guessed the life-changing experiences which would result. Full recovery took a year and included her learning to walk again. For the next five years, Tiffany used her training as a Registered Nurse to research and study any available information about Lymphedema. Research ultimately led me to the conclusion that Lymphedema patients are in need of support for this currently incurable disease. Support includes education and advocacy. I represent Virginia as part of the Lymphedema Advocacy Group, which is a patient-centered group, raising awareness. Our mission is to get passage in Congress for the Lymphedema Treatment Act.
Come hear her story and more!

Visiting with the Behavioral Therapists and teenagers angle. What is teen stuff and what is side effects of meds. Tricky. Seizures in the night? Cluster Seizures? Some things that came up over the weekend. Let's talk about Epilepsy.
The intention of this forum is to share information. For as long as epilepsy has been around it is amazing how little is known, understood and shared. I have found the best places for information is through the Epilepsy Foundation's chat rooms, Epilepsy Facebook pages and local support groups. It is my hopes that this will become another place to support those who have or lend support to those with epilepsy.
I am a newbie to this scene with my teenage daughter in her first year with epilepsy. I am shocked at how difficult it has been to navigate the medical and educational systems. Systems that should be supportive to this condition.
So let's talk about epilepsy and share information that can help us all move forward.
Thank you to all who post information in forums. Your wisdom and sharing has greatly benefited our family in coming to better understand epilepsy and all that goes with it.
with love and appreciation,

100 Pennies is the story of a young girl living in Quebec, growing up in such poverty that she often fantasized that if she could get people to give her pennies; 100 pennies in fact, she would be rich and could change her life and the lives of her family forever.
An autobiography in the works, the Voice of Leadership's guest is Gaetane Martin, author of 100 Pennies, who graciously and with intense vulnerability, shares her story with our listeners.
Gaetane sheds light on her work, speaking to educators and therapists about the importance of listening to children, and the indiscriminant scope of poverty and hunger, and its impact on our future: our children.
This is part one of 100 Pennies: the beginning. Part two airs next week and takes our guest through to a life that is savored and sends a message of love.

With mental illness affecting roughly 1 in 17 Americans, this 8-week series targets the way our nation and its churches confront the conversation surrounding mental illness and is designed to clarify broad misperceptions and shed a new light on the topic - Biblically and psychologically. The National Institute of Mental Health reports that one in four adults, approximately 57.7 million Americans experience a mental health disorder in a given year.
The series includes professionals who discuss such topics as the six stages of grief, chemical imbalances, the effects of mental health disorders on a child's education, and suicide. Additional discussions include pastors, leadership and members within the church who suffer from mental illness. The workshop is hosted by Pastor Seneca who leads the discussion utilizing Biblical references of mental illness. Reference John 9.
The workshop series also includes featured guests, psychiatric doctors, therapists, couples, teachers and families that have encountered and live within mental illness circumstances.

Tonight Bonnie Kaye is honored to have special guest Associate Professor Dr. Karin Huffer, who is a counseling and forensic psychology at Kings International University. She will talk about how PTSD can be classified as a "disability" in court after abusive marriages. Dr. Huffer designed the first graduate and undergraduate syllabi certifying disability ADA advocates. As a Nevada licensed marriage and family therapist, Dr. Huffer researches, writes, speaks, and consults on Legal Abuse Syndrome (LAS), a traumatic stress condition that occurs when an invisible disability is not recognized and accommodated under the ADAAA. Accommodations offset impairments during legal processes. Dr. Huffer latest book, Unlocking Justice: ADAAA Standard of Care (2011), provides the rubric for the use of the ADA in court by the invisibly disabled and sets the standard of care needed to prevent the repetition of LAS. Her first book, Overcoming the Devastation of Legal Abuse Syndrome (1995), is still in print and provides her initial diagnosis and findings. Dr. Huffer's schedule includes her online advocate and forensic specialist courses, presentations at conferences the next is scheduled for John Jay Law School International Conference in Athens, Greece. numerous radio interviews, and appearance as a forensic specialist and expert witness in court. Dr. Huffer's website www.equalaccessadvocates.com provides updated information, resources, and affordable services for the disabled confronting the court system.
