Divine Service for 8/10/14; Pastor Houser’s sermon. Grace and Faith are not the same thing. God is grace and He gives us faith. Everything we have is from the grace of God and is received by faith. In the Gospel reading from Matthew 14, Jesus walks on water. “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid” In moments of terror and sin, God’s grace is displayed. Grace and faith are vital for salvation.

Divine Service for 8/24/14 and the Gospel of Matthew: 16; Pastor Houser’s sermon. A gift is freely given - however wages are earned and thus owed. We feel we need to give something in return when we get a gift- but we can’t give anything to God in return as we are beggars. The wages of sin is death. We are nothing but gravel prior to God working in our lives. We can never repay the debt of forgiveness and salvation. Jesus has done it all for us but it is a gift freely given. He who believes and is baptized will be saved.

Divine Service for 7/27/14; Pastor Houser’s sermon from Matthew 13. The Kingdom of Heaven is won for us by Jesus Christ. He made us the new chosen people. Like the Hebrews in the Old Testament, God chooses us despite our sins. However, the Messiah came through the Hebrews. We are chosen not because of anything we have done, but only because of God’s grace. As Paul says in Romans 8, we are called according to His purpose

Divine Service for 7/20/14; Guest Pastor Bagnell’s sermon from Matthew 13 and Jesus’ parable of the wheat and the weeds. The devil (e.g. the weeds) is real and there are those who will not go to heaven. Don’t be confused. Our righteousness comes from Christ and He will not allow baptized believers to perish. It’s a troubling reality that the wheat must live amongst the weeds. However judgment day is coming and the weeds will be gathered up and burned.

Divine Service for 8/3/14; Pastor Houser’s sermon. In Isaiah 55, the prophet writes the word of God. “Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Why spend…your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good….Give ear and come to me; listen, that you may live. I will make an everlasting covenant with you, my faithful love promised to David.”

God has made a covenant with us Christians through Jesus Christ. In Matthew 14, Jesus feeds the crowd with 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish. They have no money but they eat bread from heaven. We are like the crowd in that we gather around our Lord Jesus Christ and are fed by Him with spiritual food. Our righteousness comes from Christ.

Divine Service for Pentecost Sunday 6/8/14; Pastor Philip Houser’s sermon. Cause and effect. In John 7, Jesus says, “Whoever believes in me – out of their heart flows rivers of living water”. Our faith is not something we do. Granted it is a good work, but it comes from the Holy Spirit. We cannot call Christ Lord expect through the Holy Spirit. Apart from the Holy Spirit, we are dead to God. As in Acts 2, the Holy Spirit comes upon us to bring Faith into our hearts. We are regenerated in the waters of Holy Baptism. We are born again in the salvation he won for us on the cross.

Sunday 9 AM Traditional Lutheran Divine Service

    in Christianity

Sunday Divine Service for 6/1/14; Pastor Philip Houser’s sermon. We, the baptized, are pilgrims in a fallen world. We’re the resistance to evil and sin. We are not collaborators with the enemy; however we are within Satan’s reach. But Christ has the ultimate victory.

In 1 Peter 4, we’re told to resist the prince of this world. Stand firm in the Faith. We have the victory. Satan will lie about the Father; e.g. He does not care about us or we have been forgotten, etc. Resist being a collaborator.

In John 17, Christ ascends so he may provide for us for the time being. And he tells us He will pray for us. Let us always look to the victor – Christ the Lord Jesus.

Sunday Divine Service for Good Shepherd Sunday 5/11/14. Pastor Philip Houser’s sermon from John 10. Door. Jesus uses that word four times in today’s Gospel reading to convey who he is and what he’s done. Doors, like shepherds, provide protection and comfort. In this case the door provides access to Christ, the good shepherd. Jesus is the door by which we enter heaven and eternal life. The door provides access – but can also be locked. Our Faith saves us and unlocks the door. Jesus is the access to righteousness and is the only way.

    in Christianity

Sunday Divine Service for 5/25/14; Pastor Philip Houser’s sermon. In Acts 17, Paul speaks to the Athenians about the inscription on their altar that says, “To the unknown god”. There’s no way to know about God’s true nature using our humans reasoning. Since the fall, we do not know God because of original sin. But we do not serve an unknown god. We know God through our Lord Jesus Christ. God has willed that we be saved – not damned. He is our Father and we are His children. Jesus came to do what we can’t do for ourselves In the Gospel reading, Jesus says- “If you love me, you will keep my commandments”. E.g. – be baptized and the sacrament of the altar. Everything we need to know about God is revealed by Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit and the Word.

Sunday 9 AM Traditional Lutheran Divine Service

    in Christianity

Sunday Divine Service for 5/18/14 and Pastor Philip Houser’s sermon. The readings and Gospel today were Acts 6 & 7, 1 Peter 2 and John 14. They contain many adjectives. Stephen describes the free men as stiff necked and uncircumcised. By nature there were enemies of God as are we. They stopped their ears and ground their teeth and they stoned Stephen to death. They refused to hear the words of the Gospel. Stephen was doing the work of God but they were ugly and violent.

Sin still remains in us; yet we are chosen by Christ. Peter says we are like new borns and He has given us life. He chooses us - not vice versa. We cannot choose righteousness. No one comes to the Father except through Christ. Our righteous works flow from Christ because of what he did on the cross. Therefore we are saints even though we suffer the effects of the fall. We will be with Him forever in heaven.

Sunday Divine Service for 4/27/14. Pastor Philip Houser’s sermon from John 20. There is nothing beyond the power of God within His will. Jesus affirms this in the upper room. The doors are locked and yet he finds His way. “Peace be with you, He says and shows the apostles his hands and side. Christ is raised from the grave. Death’s grasp has been undone. Sin and death have been overcome. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe. We receive the Holy Spirit as the apostle did in the upper room. Our sins are forgiven.
