Dolph Lundgren's motion picture debut came in the 1985 James Bond feature A VIEW TO A KILL. ‘I’m on screen for no more than ten seconds, if you blink you miss me...’. But, it was Dolph’s performance in ROCKY IV later that year that got him noticed worldwide. After a 9 month audition process among 5,000 hopefuls, Dolph was chosen by Sylvester Stallone to be his fearsome Soviet opponent in the ring, Captain Ivan Drago. From here Dolph build a solid career as an international action-hero & has since starred in more than thirty-five feature films. In the eighties & nineties, Lundgren played the classic action lead in such films as MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE, SHOWDOWN IN LITTLE TOKYO co-starring the late Brandon Lee & BLACKJACK by Hong-Kong action legend John Woo. In the 90’s Lundgren also turned in some memorable performances as the main villain to other action stars, most notably in UNIVERSAL SOLDIER opposite Jean Claude Van Damme, directed by Roland Emmerich & “JOHNNY MNEMONIC opposite Keanu Reeves. Dolph made the move behind the camera to become a director six years ago. Since then, Dolph has directed five feature films. His production company Thor Pictures is currently developing several projects, which he will produce, star & direct. His two latest projects are a feature he co-wrote & directed, COMMAND PERFORMANCE produced by Avi Lerner & Nu Image Films – & ICARUS, a neo-noir thriller, shot in Vancouver, BC. In 2009 Dolph co-starred with fellow action star Jean-Claude Van Damme in UNIVERSAL SOLDIER REGENERATION, a sequel to the film that paired the two European actors back in the 90’s. The A&P Gypsies was a musical series broadcast on radio beginning in 1924. With the opening theme of "Two Guitars," the host and band leader was Harry Horlick, who had learned gypsy folk music while traveling with gypsy bands in Istanbul.
Lionel's story began in Boulder, Colorado - many of his Baltimore buddies don't know that. His family moved to his adopted city when he was two. And B'more is where he fell in love with Jazz. R & B, too. In middle school, he was in love with Charlie Parker and Motown. In high school, so strong was his passion that he honed his musicality on clarinet, flute, piano and trombone - as well as saxophone.
His talent grew so rapidly that he won a special award - The Semper Fi Outstanding Musician Award that is given by the U.S. Marines. THAT was Lionel's graduation gift :) And that gift kept on giving at Morgan State - where he majored in Music Education. While there, he was in several ensembles - and played at the local clubs as much as his dedication to studies would allow. The Lionel Lyles Quintet was forming - so was the BUZZ.
In 2006, Lionel and his band had the opportunity to record "The September Sessions" - and yours truly was more than happy to play tracks from that album at a previous radio station. Audience reception was satisfying and there were numerous scenarios that developed because of the attention garnered from the project. Lionel had a chance to tour Europe, for example, via an invitation offered by Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines. But he was anxious to complete more education. We stayed in touch while he attended North Carolina's Central University. There, he was mentored by unbelievable artists and teachers - including Branford Marsalis and Joey Calderazzo.
With a Graduate degree and a wealth of teaching skills at his disposal, Lionel forged ahead and into the outer perimeters of his comfort zone. He is now considered a treasure in D.C. - with another album recorded. And more awards on the horizon. Count on that :) See you in the Chat Room on 5/5!

We are currently reading Michio Kaku's "The Future of the Mind: The Scientific Quest to Understand, Enhance, and Empower the Mind."
“This deeply fascinating book by theoretical physicist Kaku explores what might be in store for our minds: practical telepathy and telekinesis; artificial memories implanted into our brains; and a pill that will make us smarter. He describes work being done right now on using sensors to read images in the human brain and on downloading artificial memories into the brain to treat victims of strokes and Alzheimer’s. ..for general readers who have never really thought of the brain in all its glorious complexity and potential, the book could be a seriously mind-opening experience.” -David Pitt, review at Amazon.com
