SORT BY Relevancy
While corporate profits soar, workers employed in the food, retail and service industries cannot meet the basic standard of living. All to often, parents working within the ever increasing low wage sector wrestle between taking their sick child to the doctor's or buying food. Walmart racks in $35,000 per minute in profit and had annual sales of $405 billion, while a Walmart Associate doesn't even make $35,000 a year working full-time. In fact, it would take a Walmart Associate 786 years to earn the salary of Walmarrt's CEO Michael Duke's salary of 2012 of 20.7 million. We hear continually about the "economic recovery", but the divide between the "haves" and "have nots" has significantly widened. In recent weeks fast-food workers employed by fast food restaurants, such as McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's and KFC staged one-day strikes in cities across the country, demanding a living wage. In the 1980's Wendy's Clara Peller became an overnight sensation in the 1980s asking the quessential question, "where's the beef, those employed in the fast food industry now look at the meagre pay, asking, "where's the beef?". Please join Fred and Marg on Saturday, August 10, 2013 at 2:00 pm EST (1:00 pm Central, 12:00 pm Mountain, 11:00 am Pacific and 3:00 pm Central) for BTR's Lies My Country Told Me, "Where 's the Beef? No Living Wage for Service Workerss". You can either join us in the chat room or call in to 347-677-1814 with your opinion.
This Saturday on Critical Discourse, we want to cover 2 pressing issues.
The first, the press conference by Eric Holder, launched a formal investigation into allegations and of civil rights violations, on the part of the Ferguson, Missouri police, in the wake of the Michael Brown shooting.
To say the least, the results should be greatly anticipated and perhaps to many black people, a confirmation and vindication of what many have said for decades, that [predominately white] police forces tend to act heavy-handedly, when it comes to black people, especially black men, which ultimately reverberates into unjust treatment by the larger, criminal justice system.
However, what if the probe does not substantiate such claims? How then, will black people deal with the nagging issues, in which we find ourselves crying out for redress?
Second,, as a smaller part of the minimum wage fight, on Thursday, thousands of fast-food workers across the country went on “strike”, demonstrating and demanding that their wages be increased to $15/hour.
Presuming this was to take place, what will be the impact on food prices? Are their demands, legitimate, or perhaps, part of a larger play by unions, to garner strength, members and money?
And I might ask, is somehow, the illegal immigration lobby interspersed in this?
Calling for an increase in the minimum wage has been a losing political battle in recent years. Still, some say, "Forget about a minimum wage. Let's pay a living wage."
What is it? How's it calculated? And what are the costs? Can it be done? We'll talk to a living wage advocate - a man who isgetting some businesses to make it work on the next IN THE KNOW.
That's Wednesday night at 8:00pm. Be sure to log on, listen in, and let us know what you think. Is it time for everyone to make a living wage??

DC Mayor Vincent C. Gray said no to a living wage bill that would have required big box retail stores to pay employees $12.50 hr. Mayor Gray says he supports a living wage bill, but calls this one"fundamentally flawed".
