After a TBI, where Deb Palmer lost consciousness over asphalt, resulting in a subdural hematoma and subarachnoid hemorrhage, she was diagnosed with a seizure disorder and major depression. She knew she fell and hit her head, that something was wrong, but didn’t know what. She kept thinking it would go away with more sleep. Nobody referred her to any resources for help or support. Doctors obviously weren’t trained on how to address the long-term sequelae of brain injury or how to help someone who has had one. Deb didn’t want what happened to her to happen to others.
Deb decided to turn anger into something constructive; and, with the help of other survivors and some professionals, published five free newsletters to educate about brain injury. The demand for the publication was greater than expected so she decided to form a nonprofit organization. Thus, the Brain Injury Connection (BIC) was born. www.braininjuryconnection.org

The term memory storage refers to the work of the system that stores information for use later on—your system for long-term learning and recall. Material from working memory is put into storage by this system. There are many sub-systems for storing different kinds of information. After an injury, memory usually makes weaker traces, making the stored information unreliable. Important information should always be saved in a more permanent medium such as taking notes. Holding out hope to get your pre-injury memory storage back leads to disappointment rather than recovery. The key to memory recovery is metamemory—knowledge of your own memory abilities and deficits. Metamemory lets you plan out ways to cope with your memory deficits. - Dr. Larry Schutz

KICKING BACK & LOOKING BACK: Through My Rear View Mirror
The last couple of weeks in the calendar year is the time that many of us start thinking about our own personal year in review.
We get out our list and determine if it's been a "good" or "bad" year based on our accomplishments at work, our relationships with family and how, how much weight we've lost, or how many dollars we have in the bank. But not for Tamarra! She started out with intentions and no “list”.. and what’s transpired over this past year has been nothing short of amazing. It’s been a tremendous year of confusion and enlightenment, losses and gains, hard work and no work... all to culminate into a life well lived with blessings, gratitude and abundance.
Come join Tamarra and her host Ben Carter in this journey of discovery! Feel free to enhance the experience with your comments or questions by dialing 347-857-2878 anytime during the broadcast.
“See” you there!

All alcoholics and addicts feel shame. It’s impossible to avoid, and while shame is painful and can keep many of us stuck in the throes of addiction, there is hope. We do not have to be defined by our shame, and indeed learning tools to cope with shame and learn and grow as people is an integral part of recovery.
To begin with, though, it’s important to define shame. One way to do this is to clarify the difference between shame and guilt. Guilt is feeling badly about something we’ve done, and shame is feeling badly about who we are. Guilt is based on actions, and shame is built on feelings. Another way to put it is this: When we feel guilty we feel we made a mistake. When we feel shame we feel we are a mistake.
In this show, we will talk about building tools to identify shame, build awareness of it, talk about the importance of reaching out to reduce the power shame holds over you, and discuss the power of story and voice in reducing and even eliminating the hold shame has in your life.
Merry Christmas to one and all!
