Parenting Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Kids

    in Parents

When a child announces that he or she is gay, lesbian or transgender many parents are unable to respond to the news with sensitivity or support of their child. Reactions can range from throwing the child out of the house immediately to making every effort to understand what the child is going through, and everything in between, such as: "How could you do this to me? What did I do wrong?"

Our today's guest is Dr. Anne Dohrenwend, author of "Coming Around: Parenting Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Kids," who will discuss how the child's "coming out" to his or her parents can be the most determinant factor in the child's moving forward successfully. Anything short of telling the child "I love you" will be heard by the gay young person that he/she doesn't really deserve love but the family members offer it anyway.

Anne Dohrenwend, PhD, ABPP, is assistant program director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program at McLaren Regional Medical Center, Flint, Michigan and an associate professor at Michigan State University. She works with parents and young people coping with LGBT issues. She has a PhD in counseling psychology from the University of North Dakota and is board certified in Clinical Health Psychology. Anne and her partner live in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

In the Turfgrass Zealot Project Episode #4, host Dave Wilber chats with Extreme Super/Athletes Thomas Bastis (California Golf Club of San Francisco) and Scott Bower (Martis Camp, Truckee, CA).

Imagine spending nine plus days biking, treking, kayaking, orienteering and scrambling over 450 miles with an hour of sleep every 24 hours. And imagine calling this fun. Thomas Bastis and Scott Bower (along with Scott's wife Susan) don't have to imagine this. They lived it. And lived to tell about it. Hear about the adventures of Team Tahoe at the 2015 Primal Quest and their adventure racing history. Oh, and did we mention these guys are A-game superintendents?

Join Dave Wilber as he tries to drill into the heads of these two turfheads and find out what being a world class athlete, husband, dad and superintendent is all about... and making it work.

Dave also lays on a little Turfgrass Zealot wisdom about nothing being permanent, fall renewal, and holding on too tight.

  • Is fear of the media really keeping gay pro athletes in the closet?

    in LGBT

A recent report said that two gay NFL players are refusing to come out publicly as gay because they don't want a lot of media attention for any kind of big announcement. It's an interesting revelation that both reflects and belies what we think we know about professional athletes.

On the one hand they want all the attention they can get to maximize exposure. Exposure means more of the all-mighty dollar that so many of them seek in the short span of their careers. On the flip side, we often hear that athletes don't want to be known as the "gay athlete" but just want to be known for their athletic accomplishments.

We discuss the idea of the media keeping athletes in the closet, and also the impact that big-name professional athletes can have when they come out publicly.

Plus, we have the growing attention being paid to trans issues in sports and the generosity of one young gay professional athlete named Robbie Rogers.

When should gay college athletes come out?

    in LGBT

Outsports ran a letter from a closeted Division I college basketball player who is gay, who is wrestling with whether he should come out. "I would like other people to see another gay athlete successfully playing in Division 1 athletics. I would like for a teenager battling the same things I struggled with to see that things will work out and to not stress about something that seems so major but is really something minor. I would like to see the LGBT community grow within athletics."

Yet he is still weighing his ultimate decision.
