Gentle World Cafe host, Suparna Malhotra, talks with Elisa Paloschi, about her film.
Driving with Selvi is a documentary film that tells the story of a remarkable young woman who defies strict patriarchal traditions and escapes a child marriage to become South India’s first female taxi driver.
We first meet 18-year-old Selvi at a girls’ shelter in 2004 - timid, soft-spoken, a fresh runaway from a violent past and the victim of a life set against her.
Over the 10 years filmed, we see a remarkable transformation as Selvi finds her voice and refuses to surrender to societal expectations – learning to drive, starting her own taxi company and working on the front lines of reproductive health education.
Instead of adhering to the patriarchal codes that oppress and restrict women, Selvi’s bold determination defies and challenges them. Will she hold steadfast on her road to economic empowerment? Will she remarry? After being unwanted and abused by her own mother, will she be able to break the vicious cycle of devaluing girls so prevalent in her society?
This character-driven story highlights the challenges that the disempowered female population in India face. While the film offers a glimpse into a world of poverty, prejudice and desperate circumstances, it shatters stereotypes as Selvi redefines herself from victim to survivor.
Through Selvi’s eyes, the audience is taken on an intimate journey, and perhaps even a familiar one, of healing, overcoming obstacles, and fulfilling dreams. Throughout this journey, it is Selvi’s unwavering spirit that shines through. Her refusal to surrender offers inspiration, hope and the clear message that anything is possible.

One of my many talents, geez, I am cocky and arrogant, and I fully embrace those qualities, is the performance of one-man shows that educate, entertain and make the audience say, "ffffffwwwwwhhhhhhaaaaaaaattt" and "hhhhhhhmmmmmmmmm."
In this shot podcast I discuss my Man of Oz: brainless, heartless and gutless show that seeks to help people get their heads our of their ass and their ass off of the couch and improve the quality of their life. This one-man show, which I perform as a key note address, leverages the power of my own life story and how I learned to improve the quality of the connections in my life so that I could experience life on a deeper, richer and much more satisifying level.
It's a cathartic and satiricaly roller coaster ride into my world, over the rainbow, in which I have toiled long and hard to overcome my issues and leverage my personality, temperament and life story to deal with The Bullshit of Life

Why good friends are so important
A lot of research has been done looking into the benefits of friendship, and the research has found exactly what you might expect. It turns out that the better quality relationships you have; the more likely you are to be happy. Therefore it’s good for your happiness to be a great friend to someone and to have a group of good friends supporting you. But it can be hard to pinpoint exactly what makes a good friend.
Signs of a good friend
Friends will come and go in your life, but more important than how long a friendship lasts, is that a good friend will love you for who you are. The way you can tell the sign of a good friend is by looking at the actions they take –big and small – that show they care.
Some common signs of a good friend include
someone who will support you no matter what
someone you can trust and who won’t judge you
someone who won’t put you down or deliberately hurt your feelings
someone who is kind and has respect for you
someone who will love you because they choose to, not because they feel like they should
someone whose company you enjoy
being trustworthy and willing to tell you the truth, even when it’s hard
someone who can laugh when you do
someone who is willing to stick around when things get tough
someone who makes you smile
someone who is there to listen
someone who will cry when you cry.
