There’s a revolution taking place in understanding Learning Disabilities. With new neuroscientific findings, we see that an individual with dyslexia--a language based LD-- has a brain that works differently while reading. Educators at all levels are taking this new knowledge to use new assistive technologies to tailor content to the individual mind of the student. Now, a student with dyslexia and a student with aspraxia -- whose brain has problems planning to move the body parts (e.g., lips, jaw, tongue) needed for speech -- in the same classroom, can have their individual lessons optimized for their particular strengths and weaknesses.

Once labelled "severley learning disabled" by his teachers, Jonathan Mooney survived school to eventually graduate from Brown University (with honors). Jonathan will talk to Terri and Nicole about living with a learning disability and how to view it as a difference and not a disability.

Babies who have had open-heart surgery, especially those with complex, congenital heart defects (CCHDs), are at much greater risk for brain injury or learning disabilities. Because of the heart defects themselves, and because of the complicated circulation involved with CCHDs, infants are more at risk for strokes. Infants who have had strokes often have brain injury due to stroke and those children with brain injuries caused in early childhood are more at risk for learning disabilities.
While this sounds very frightening, it doesn’t have to mean that your child’s quality of life will be greatly inferior to a child without a heart defect. Today’s show features a heart mom whose child had an anoxic brain injury (which is fairly uncommon), a pediatric cardiologist and pediatric neurologist from Boston Children’s Hospital, and a special education advocate. These expert Guests share information to help others navigate raising a child with a brain injury and/or learning disability.

We all know people with physical and/or mental issues limiting their abiliy to perform tasks most of us take for granted. Some have severed or non functioning limbs. Others are blind, deaf, and/or mute. Others have mental challenges. An increasing number have a combination of several of these issues.
It never ceaces to amaze me hw people with the decks stacked against them like this manage to not overcome these obsticals, but rise to great hights in areas most would believe to be impossible.
A teanage boy (blind since birth) becoming captain of the high school wrestling team and leading his team to the state chapionships.
Two perfomers creating amazing careers in show business (Both have Cerebral Palsey)
A man with a tremendous studdering problem since childhood becoming a famous actor on stage and screen and creating a multi million dollar career with his voice. (James Earl Jones).
A man stricken with polio as a child Becoming President of The United States. (FDR).
Many more examples proving that there are no disabilities, ONLY CHALLENGES.
