Tonight we welcome author and Jonestown survivor Laura Johnston Kohl to the show. When 914 members of Peoples Temple and four visiting Americans died in Guyana, South America on November 18, 1978, Laura Johnston Kohl survived. She was one of 87 who lived through the trauma.
After participating with the Black Panthers, and attending Woodstock, Laura moved into Peoples Temple in California in 1970, and was an active and enthusiastic member until the day it ended. She moved to Guyana in March 1977. She frequently traveled between Georgetown and Jonestown, a 24-hour boat ride, but moved into Jonestown in October 1978. Laura’s survival was a fluke.
It took twenty years for Laura to rebuild her life and have the determination to research this tragedy. The first ten years were spent in Synanon. Then, she reunited with many of the other survivors to put the pieces together and to get some understanding. After ten years she wrote her autobiography.
LAURA JOHNSTON KOHL
Laura Johnston Kohl grew up as an activist in Washington, D.C., and watched as many of her heroes were assassinated in the 1960s. While she was in high school and college, John Kennedy, Bobby Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, and others were killed. That had a huge impact on her. She attended college in Connecticut and continued her commitment to work for change and to make a difference. While exercising her civil rights to protest peacefully, she was tear-gassed while protesting the war in Viet Nam. After a brief marriage, a visit to Woodstock, and a stint working with the Black Panthers, she moved to California to join her sister.
Soon after that, she was introduced to Peoples Temple and spent the next nine years in California and Guyana. She was away from Jonestown on the day when 913 of her friends and family died. The next twenty years were spent recovering, and rebuilding her life

I found Laura via her book Confessions of a 3-Day Novelist How to Write an Entire Book in Just 72 Hours . With a title like that, how could I resist? I stumbled on her name again while reviewing author marketing books and knew I had to interview her. She's not new to the indie game: she's been an author and journalist for years, has plenty of steamy reads for your reading pleasure, and understands the elements that make stories work.

It seems it’s not enough in this world to just be happy with Netflix, routinely clean sheets and debatably handsy yoga teachers.
Apparently, there is a greater threshold for happiness only attainable for people who own shared silverware (that they didn’t pay for themselves) and bad memories of a party in Vegas (that the groom certainly had to pay for).
According to researchers John F. Helliwell and Shawn Grover, married people are happier than you and it’s probably because they are together and you are still single. ~ Laura Argintar
