LAURA JOHNSTON KOHL
Laura Johnston Kohl grew up as an activist in Washington, D.C., and watched as many of her heroes were assassinated in the 1960s. While she was in high school and college, John Kennedy, Bobby Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, and others were killed. That had a huge impact on her. She attended college in Connecticut and continued her commitment to work for change and to make a difference. While exercising her civil rights to protest peacefully, she was tear-gassed while protesting the war in Viet Nam. After a brief marriage, a visit to Woodstock, and a stint working with the Black Panthers, she moved to California to join her sister.
Soon after that, she was introduced to Peoples Temple and spent the next nine years in California and Guyana. She was away from Jonestown on the day when 913 of her friends and family died. The next twenty years were spent recovering, and rebuilding her life
Our special guest tonight is Laura Johnston Kohl, Jonestown survivor and author of “Jonestown Survivor: An Insider’s Look.”
Laura Johnston Kohl was in Georgetown when the mass murder/suicide of 918 people occurred in Jonestown. Laura has written the book to tell her perspective of this tragic event in history.
In Laura’s past, she was an activist in Washington D.C. and watched as many of her heroes were assassinated in the 60s. During her years at college in Connecticut, she actively worked to make a difference in the world. Laura protested peacefully to fight against the war in Viet Nam and was tear-gassed in the process. She married, divorced and made a trip to Woodstock, followed up by a period of working with the Black Panthers. Soon after, she moved to California to be with her sister.
During this time, she was introduced to Peoples Temple where she spent the following nine years in California and then moved to Guyana with the group. She was away from Jonestown on November 18, 1978, when 913 of her friends and family died.
Tonight, Laura will talk about her life in Jonestown and her book, “Jonestown Survivor: An Insider’s Look”.

This is another combination Trundlebed Tales and Travel Times episode. This time we are going to take a look at West Branch, Iowa. Why are the Laura Ingalls Wilder/Rose Wilder Lane Papers held at the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum in West Branch? What is a Presidential Library? How did the Hoover complex develop? Also, we'll look at what to do if you visit today, what you can see, where you can stay and where you can eat. I think you'll really love this episode from either the history or the travel angle.

My Guest Tonight On The Literary Corner is none other than TRANSGENDER Author Toni Newman of I RISE-THE TRANSFORMATION OF TONI NEWMAN A MEMOIR. This will be a very memorable show, Don’t Miss It. I Rise – The Transformation of Toni Newman, the first memoir written in America by a member of the African American transgender community. It is gut-wrenchingly honest, factually supported, and well written.
During this journey Ms. Newman tended to the fetish fantasies of Hollywood’s A-list, I Rise has been turned into Feature film: Heart of a Woman with a stellar cast. Co-Screenwriter/Producer TONI NEWMAN is a 1985 graduate of Wake Forest University with a degree in sociology. Toni Newman has been a trans-activist for a number of years.
I’m extremely excited about this interview and I look forward to delving into the life of Ms. Toni Newman, who by the way met and conversed with Ms. Maya Angelou, who was the inspiration for the title of her Memoir.
