Scott Yanow (Bio):
.....Jazz Journalist and historian. Since then, I have been involved in many projects. Being the Senior Editor for the 3rd edition of the All Music Guide For Jazz resulted in a countless number of my CD reviews and biographies being utilized throughout the internet including Pandora Radio. In addition to having written ten books so far (most recently The Jazz Singers) and writing for the Jazz Heritage Club, I have written several episodes for the popular jazz radio series Jim Cullum's Riverwalk - Live At The Landing.
I have written over 750 liner notes, hundreds of press biographies and press releases, and it has been said that I have reviewed more jazz recordings than anyone in history. I have contributed to virtually all of the major jazz magazines including Downbeat, Jazz Times, Jazziz, Cadence, Coda, The Mississippi Rag, Jazz Forum, Jazz News, The Jazz Report, Planet Jazz, Jazz Now and Jazz
Improv. These days I write regularly for Jazz Inside, Downbeat, Jazziz, Los Angeles Jazz Scene and The Jazz Rag.....Learn More

When Alex Snydman first visited "Hybrid Jazz", he was ecstatic about the response that "Fortunate Action" was receiving. And he had every reason to be excited! Even those who don't praise easily were disarmed. Here's this gifted guitarist-turned-drummer who felt the music to his core. Beautifully written songs and a kind of synergy on the album that is only achieved after MANY albums, usually. Critics are still falling in love - and it has been a while since the project dropped. Last year :)
Alex is returned to the show so that we can pump up some very cool East Coast stops. He had spent incredible years in Massachusetts - and played in New York - but he's based in the Los Angeles area now. In order to complete his studies. For him to "come home" is a big deal! For you to see him? Even bigger. What he offers in the way of warmth and artistry in his performances is something that you don't want to miss.
"Fortunate Action", by the way, has meaning. Paraphrasing Alex, the use of the words represent thepositive ripples that multiply when we listen to our inner voice. He'll be happy to explain that more! As his friend and mentor, Eric Harland, says: "Alex embodies the spirit that we call love." And love cannot be anything but positive. Hey, it's gonna be THAT kind of show! Hah! We truly had a great time when we first met - WHILE we were speaking during "Hybrid Jazz" - and we both expect that good vibe to deja vu you this time as well.
You'll hear tracks from the CD, to be sure. One of the beautiful asides of this project is knowing that Alex, besides composing himself, graciously gave all three of his pianists space for their songs, too. You'll FEEL the gratitude!
Please join us on 7/29 - you are promised rejuvenation!

Hybrid Jazz has always strived to show class, dignity and variety with each episode. What you'll hear on 7/22/14 takes all of that to a new level. Helen Sung has been captivating listeners - via recording or live - since she emerged on the New York scene in the late 90's. But I'm getting ahead of myself ;)
Born to Chinese immigrants in Houston, our guest was playing piano at five. Her teacher was strict and permitted Helen to play only Classical music - which she did throughout her education at the respected Houston High School of Performing and Visual Arts. Her motivation for college: to teach and to perform when possible. All that changed when she saw Harry Connick, Jr., on stage - in Helen's last year of University of Texas at Austin.
The transition was swift. Obsessed with visualizing Harry's fingers on the piano, Helen got a hold of Everything-That-Is-Jazz: from Jelly Roll Morton to Keith Jarrett. She received dual degrees in Texas, but her eye was on the inaugural program at the Thelonious Monk Institute in Boston. It was mutual love - Helen's unique talent was now under the watchful eye of Artistic Director, Ron Carter. She toured with the Cream of the Jazz Crop - across the water with Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock. It changed her life. And ours who are fans.
That move to New York cemented what many already knew, including Wynton Marsalis, who now has HIS eye on where Helen Sung will land next. Terri Lyne Carrington knows, Helen having been a key component in the award-winning "Mosaic Project" in 2011. The Kennedy Center realizes her power, too - she is a recipient of the Mary Lou Williams Jazz Piano Competition.
Her sixth project, "Anthem For a New Day" is brilliant and brave. We could go ON for days about Helen Sung - but let HER tell her story: on 7/22/14 :)
