Yoga for Cancer - By: Tari Prinster

    in Spirituality

Tari Prinster is a cancer survivor, yoga teacher and author. She is the Founder of Yoga4Cancer, LLC (y4c) and the Retreat Project (nonprofit) – businesses that are bringing specialized yoga cancer survivors through classes & retreats.  Also she leads a robust teacher training program to help enable yoga teachers to best adapt all styles to fit the unique needs of cancer patients & survivors.

In Tari’s own words, she recounts her background with yoga and cancer: ‘When I was fifty, I started a yoga practice on a hunch it would ease menopausal symptoms. It did! That was sixteen years ago. Today, I am an example that it is never too late to start, never too late to change. Yoga made me feel younger and stand straighter. I sleep better, my weight is good, and my bones are strong.

I found yoga a powerful tool to manage the daily challenges of cancer treatments as well as the side effects and life-long vulnerabilities they create. I discovered yoga was more than a way to stay healthy. It gave me emotional support and spiritual comfort so needed during recovery.

I was curious why yoga was doing so much for me. My research made it clear why yoga strengthens the immune system, thus providing, among other things, protection against a cancer reoccurrence.

Stop Child Abuse Now (SCAN) - 1060

    in Self Help

Tonight's special guest is Bo Budinsky, a returning NAASCA family member from Texas, who's a child abuse survivor and a tireless child protection and adult survivor advocate. In January 2013 he founded Save One Survivor, after a life of addiction, shattered relationships, abandoned careers and homeless. As a child he'd been repeatedly violated. Bo knew himself as a broken person, deeply troubled and hopelessly addicted. He spent years working on himself, grabbing onto anything available which he thought would be healing. In September, 2010, Bo was selected to appear on Oprah Winfrey's now-famous 200 Male Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse show. Bo shares, "I had an epiphany. It became clear what my struggle all these years had been about. It was about the business of preparing me to be in a place where I could be of service to others with the same plight." He continues, "Only these last few years have I "come out of hiding" so to speak. I have been ashamed of something and running my entire life. I never knew what it was. Now I know. I am a survivor of childhood sexual abuse and it has profoundly affected my life." Bo says "I have one favor to ask. Please speak up, loudly, if you have even an inkling that a child is being sexually abused. Living with the effects is torturous. And if you think it is not very prevalent listen to this: 1 in 3 women AND 1 in 5 men are sexually abused before they are 18. What is at stake is the innocence of a precious child." Helo Matzelle debuts newest book Halo Found Hope

    in Lifestyle

Despite being tested by a terrifying diagnosis, Helo Matzelle clung to faith

Helo Matzelle thought her relationship with God was as good as it could get. As a busy stay-at-home mom and devoted wife, she would have described her life as beautiful. Then, one Friday afternoon in 2011, her life changed. In her new book, Halo Found Hope: A Memoir shares how her life went from planning ahead for the weekend to relearning basic skills after being diagnosed with a rare brain tumor.

Matzelle says when she looks back, she should have paid more attention to the physical symptoms: the strange voices in her head, like she was remembering movie lines. The metallic taste in her mouth. The ringing in her ears. But those symptoms were easily chalked up to the stress of life or the effects of spending too much time in a building with freshly painted walls. However, what started as a routine MRI for her ear revealed Matzelle’s symptoms signaled a more serious problem. “After hearing the terrifying news that I had a golf ball-sized tumor on my brain,

Matzelle details how her recovery from surgery was only supposed to entail six days in the hospital, but things took a turn for the worse in the operating room. Matzelle’s brain tumor was one in two million: Because of the way it was structured, the removal caused intense brain swelling, and several hours later, she became unresponsive. A portion of all author proceeds from Helo Found Hope will go to the National Brain Tumor Society,

Concussion and Mild Traumatic Brain Injury

    in Health

March 27, 2015: At Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas, physical therapists often see patients who have suffered a mild traumatic brain injury or concussion in the line of duty. Sometimes the concussion is the result of an explosion in combat. Other times, it might be due to a fall or collision during training.

Lt Col Tony Cromer Jr, suffered a concussion due to a more common workplace hazard, when his head was slammed by an opening door. The effects of that workplace accident, including headaches and dizziness, were the same as they often are for soldiers on the battlefield.

In this episode, physical therapist Miriam Hammerle, PT, Cert SMT, and Cromer discuss his injury and treatment.
