Stay: Lessons My Dogs Taught Me about Life, Loss, and Grace

    in Christianity

On this special edition of Free for All Friday, our guest is Dave Burchett who is the author of the new book Stay: Lessons My Dogs Taught Me about Life, Loss and Grace.

You’ll be enthralled by this story of a man and his lovable Labrador retriever, Hannah, and what their canine friendship can show us about life, grace, and long walks in the park.

Hannah was Dave’s best friend. He couldn’t imagine starting a day without her tail wagging an energetic greeting, her body wiggling with sheer gratitude when her food dish was filled, and her unbridled enthusiasm for tennis balls. (How she fit three tennis balls in her mouth at once he’ll never know.)

So when Dave first learned of Hannah’s cancer diagnosis, he decided to take whatever time he had left with Hannah to cherish the moments and capture his thoughts in a journal. As he wrote about his canine friend, he soon realized that Hannah was an able (and furry) mentor of faith, grace, kindness, and forgiveness.
You won’t want to miss this heartwarming tale of a dog who knew how to live . . . and showed her owner how.

Today's episode is sponsored in part by The Chronopticus Chronicles.

Understanding The Loss of Your Pet

    in Pets

What happens to you when your pet dies?

The death of a beloved pet can mean saying goodby to a best friend.  Not only do you miss the companionship but this may have been your one source of unconditional and nonjudgemental love.

Our pets come to symbolize many things to each of us.  To Judy Cameron, co-host, her dogs represented her children.  To Judy Helm Wright, co-host, her dog filled an empty nest. Imagine how a pet may reflect the ideal mate or parent or companion--ever faithful, loyal and welcoming us daily. Can you see in your mind's eye how strong this bond may be?

We know how you feel, because we have felt the same way.  We understand your pain and acknowledge your sorrow.

    Give Yourself time to grieve

As coaches, authors and pet parents, we truly do understand your grief. We recognize that you do not need anyone else's approval to mourn the loss of your pet, nor do you need to justify your feelings to others.  But, we offer a "Safe Place" to share your stories and be able to be open about your feelings right now.

Join us on our weekly broadcasts as well as on our Facebook page--  http://www.facebook.com/pages/Dealing-with-the-loss-of-a-pet/716509988445040  Return often to this Facebook page and find out exciting news about a pet loss support group and tele-classes.  You will be so glad you did.

Grieving The Loss Of A Pet-When Is It Time To Get A New Dog?

    in Pets

All pet lovers have to face the death of their pets, sooner or later.  Other people may not understand the loss of a beloved best friend.  They may say "it's just a dog," or "it was only a cat, not a child" or even "Get over it already, it was a pet, not a person."

But when we lose an animal, we also lose the companionship, comfort, security and unconditional love of our best friend.  This loss of a pet is devasting, as only another pet parent can know.  The pain of that loss is very deep and real to the person or persons who considered the dog a member of the family.

The loss can be as emotionally significant as  the loss of a close human relative.  Loving and kind people care about both humans and animals.

When Is The Time To Get A New Dog?

While an animal companion can never be "replaced" it is important that the people involved are emotionally ready to welcome another companion into the family.  In this podcast Judy Helm Wright and Judy Cameron will be discussing the signs and signals that your spirit is ready to invite a new animal into your life.

In a supportive atmosphere we will provide a forum to help you make the decision when the right time is to welcome a new pet, while still honoring the life of the  pet you lost.
