Politics Done Right on KPFT - The politics of religion

    in Politics Progressive

    This week’s show
    June 30th, 2014

    The politics of religion

I attended the Texas Democratic Convention this weekend. The entire convention was inspiring and filled with energy. I spoke to a woman, an ordained minister who placed religion, politics, policy, and compassion for fellow human beings into context. Maybe the Supreme Court should listen to her after what they did today. Maybe they need to realize that religion has no place in business.

Today is a day that will live in infamy. Everyone knows that the Supreme Court over the years have given corporations progressively more and more human rights. Today the corporation was also given the ability to have a religion.

The Supreme Court in ruling on the side of Hobby Lobby has done two things. It has declared war on women’s rights from the highest court of the land. It has codified into its interpretation of the law that companies like people can go to church. Maybe they will find some way to lock corporations up, throw them in a jail cell when they misbehave.

But you know what? Of more concern is that the Supreme Court has made corporations people with a license to discriminate. They are people with the right to control women. They have authorized a war on women.

Politics Done Right on KPFT - Stop rewarding Obamacare political malpractice

    in Politics Progressive

There is no doubt that the Affordable Care Act is working. There is no doubt that Texans are dying because of the choices Republican politicians made. They made the decision to not accept the Medicaid Expansion to the Affordable Care Act, Obamacare. The question is, what do we do? What do you think. Let’s talk about it. Your voice is very important.

Politics Done Right on KPFT - The People’s Budget, the budget you never heard of

    in Politics Progressive

Did you know that there is a budget out there that is a middle-class centric budget? This budget came neither from the Obama administration or the Republican Congress. In fact the budgets released by the Republican Congress was a fraud on every poor and middle-class American.

Nobel Price winning economist Paul Krugman excoriated the Republican budget. As usual the President’s budget was a compromised budget. So why have we not heard too much about the people’s budget? Are you kidding? It is about the Plutocracy’s control of the message. Well as long as KPFT is on air you control this message.

What do you think. Let’s talk about it.

Politics Done Right on KPFT - America can afford Medicare for all

    in Politics Progressive

    This week’s show
    July 7th, 2014

America can afford Medicare for all

Last week while performing my engineering duties on KPFT’s Thinkwing Radio with Mike Honig, a rather disturbing call came from a caller. The caller was not a bad person. The caller was not ill willed. The caller simply bought into the tenet that the mythical free market can solve all of America and the world’s problems.

I do not mind folks having different ideological beliefs in most segments of our economy. In fact it may even be a great experiment to show what works effectively.

Where these ideologies cause pain, financial distress, or deaths unnecessarily to our fellow human beings, to our fellow Americans, one should not leave it up to some unseen, unknown, or so far failed market.
When the caller implied that morality had no role in the implementation of healthcare, I was left flabbergasted. He seemed to be of the belief that somehow there was some intrinsic benevolence to our mythical free market.

There are grey areas in every debate. However there are areas where there are absolutes. Healthcare is one of the areas with absolutes. Those who want a complete mythical free market answer to healthcare have already been proven wrong. Americans need not have had to go through the past decades of wasteful medical spending and medical robbery. Simple arithmetic had the answer.

There is only one solution that makes mathematical sense. It is Medicare for all.

Politics Done Right on KPFT - Ta-nehisi Coates’ challenges Shelby Steele

    in Politics Progressive

I was shocked after watching ThisWeek yesterday. It was a conversation between Ta-nehisi Coates and Shelby Steele. It so affected me that as I wrote the blog of the week I was shaking from an anger that someone’s mind could be so enslaved.

While I have no intentions of talking about this subject today, I felt compelled to bring it up in a broadcast domain to counteract it since George Stephanopoulos did not.

Politics Done Right on KPFT - Similarities between Cuba and New York City

    in Politics Progressive

Two big stories peculating this week are President Obama opening up diplomatic relations with Cuba and two officers being gunned down in New York. Today I will share two blogs of the week instead of one. They will initially seem completely unrelated and unconnected. I will connect them after reading and want to explore your thoughts. The two blogs are titled respectively “50 years of foreign policy failures & Cuba was brought to you by a willfully ignorant media” and “Bill de Blasio must not succumb to thuggish union leaders and their political protégés“

Politics Done Right on KPFT - Examining Islamophobic Teacher Angela Box

    in Politics Progressive

Politics Done Right will have Angela Box as the featured guest. Who is Angela Box? She is the former HISD Teacher that got into a conflict with the school district and parents for some disturbing references she made towards Muslims.

After the event I wrote this blog post about the incident. Angela Box was not happy about my post. We spoke several times over Facebook  and by phone where I invited her to Politics Done Right to have a civil discussion.

It is that time of year again. It is that time where you show KPFT that in fact you cherish what KPFT brings. KPFT brings you real fact based news, music, and community information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. In between the dialogue with Angela Box I will be asking our kind listeners to consider pledging to KPFT.

I want to give a big thank you for the most generous donations from Barbara Madera and Albert Ponton who donated at the KPFT.org website. These two generous Texans understand that keeping viable independent radio is a must to maintain our democracy.

Politics Done Right on KPFT - States no expanding Obamacare killing citizens

    in Politics Progressive

Today’s show is a discussion with you about the biggest poorly reported travesty occurring in our country. Some governors are causing the deaths of thousands of their citizens.

While the talking heads on TV talk Obamacare strategy and how it will affect the 2014 elections, they continue to effect a disservice on every American citizen. Why because they concentrate on frivolities. The truly impactful aspects of Obamacare are under-covered yet the fallacies are given plausibility. Where is Charlene Dill’s story? Where is Elizabeth Hand’s story?

Surely in a mobile country like the United States one has relatives in both Red States and Blue States. Everyone must be made aware of the different outcomes that result from the actions of their governors relative to the implementation of Obamacare in their respective states.

If enough Texans, Floridians, Louisianans, Alabamians, and the citizens of other states not implementing Obamacare were fully informed, governors irrespective of party would be forced to do the right thing. Absent valid information, many are stuck in a state of fear and confusion.

Politics Done Right on KPFT - Will Sanders use 2008 Obama playbook beat Hillary?

    in Politics Progressive

Last night Bernie Sanders had house parties throughout the country. Over 100,000 people signed up. I went to one in the role of a blogger and was blown away by the group of people attending. Bernie Sanders has been accused of having supporters that do not reflect the demographics of America. It seems like the Black Lives Matter protest at Netroots Nation 2015 has completely changed the character of his campaign operation.

This particular Bernie Sanders house party did not only reflect America, it reflected Houston, it reflected Texas. Moreover the stream beamed into homes throughout the country was also very diverse. Bernie Sanders has not changed his message. He enhanced it. He made it more reflective. He made it more inclusive.

Currently the polls still show Hillary Clinton with a substantial lead. It also shows Bernie Sanders constantly chipping away. Will there be a real populist vs status quo Democratic Primary after all?

Politics Done Right on KPFT - Interview w/ Black Lives Matter’s Patrisse Cullors

    in Politics Progressive

I have been to Netroots Nation in five consecutive years. Netroots Nation is the largest conference of Liberal bloggers, writers, politicians, and organizations in the country. Every year panels are held to educate, strategize, inform, and network. Politicians abound as they seek to enlarge their political footprint.

Netroots Nation has been eventful every single time. We’ve had protest actions in Detroit about water shutoffs and emergency managers, as well as actions in Providence, Minneapolis, San Jose, and beyond. We have had protests and actions to support our immigrant brothers and sisters. We have even challenged presidential candidates vociferously.

Netroots Nation 2015 was different. The passion of the disruption effected by the Black Lives Matter movement led by Patrisse Cullors and other local activists including one from Houston was monumental. It was disruptive. It caught Netroots, Bernie Sanders, and Martin O’Malley off guard. And that was their intent. Their is an existential problem for many of our brothers and sisters of color that for the most part has been ignored and or misunderstood. After that action, the problem is now in the forefront.
