This week is EARLY COLLEGE WEEK and we are celebrating with a visit from Harold Brown, President of EDworks discusses how the earning of college credit in high school leads to success in post-secondary.
The International Association for K-12 Online Learning (iNACOL) and KnowledgeWorks released a new report last month which provides a comprehensive vision for supporting state and local efforts to implement student-centered learning through competency education, where learning is the constant and time is the variable. The report, “A K-12 Federal Policy Framework for Competency Education: Building Capacity for Systems Change” describes barriers and opportunities which federal policy makers and advocates can leverage to help catalyze change in our K-12 education system.
Lucy Matos talks to co-hosts Eric Komoroff and Dr. Jason Stein about your teen's school. Ms. Matos had the good fortune of starting two urban public school in NYC, one as the founding principal of the Ella Baker School Pre-K-8. And as a founding teacher of Central Park East Elementary. Matos has the distinction of teaching at both Central Park East 1 and Central Park East2 as well as being the director of Central Park East 1 for 10 years. She joined the Leadership Academy in 2004, after spending two years at New Visions coaching in the Principal’s Mentoring Program. Ms. Matos retired from the Department of Education in 2002 after spending 32 years in a combination of roles as an educator.
During her years at C.P.E.1 Ms. Matos served on the Board of the Center for Collaborative Education whose main mission was to help create small schools around the city. Many of those schools continue to thrive and serve their communities well. In addition Ms. Matos took the work of CCE and traveled around the country speaking to school groups and parents of the work of C.P.E.
During 2002 thru 2004 Ms. Matos served as a consultant to Knowledgeworks Foundation in Columbus Ohio. Ms. Matos’s work at Brookhaven High School was in leadership development with the principals and the restructuring of a large complex into four thematic based schools. Ms. Matos has worked extensively as a facilitator and an advocate for parents in small schools. Ms. Matos is a graduate of City College of the City of New York, and Bank Street College.

Our guest today is Rebecca Kelley, the National Director of Achievement Gap Initiatives of the YMCA. During 12 years with the YMCA of Greater Cincinnati, Rebecca co-led a multi-sector community team that developed the award-winning Cincinnati Community Learning Center initiative and academic enrichment programs, including CincyAfterSchool, a 2013 nominee for National Summer Learning Association’s Award of Excellence. Through school-community partnership, Cincinnati produced a rise in graduation rates during the past decade from 50 percent to 82 percent, and a reduction in the achievement gap from 14.5 percent to 4.5 percent. Prior to joining the YMCA, Rebecca served as the director of knowledge and innovation for Strive’s National Network at the KnowledgeWorks Foundation, she supported more than 90 cradle to career collective impact initiatives.
Grenier, with her guest Rebecca Kelley, hope to not only share their love of the written word, but also what makes a good book for young readers and much more.
