    IN THE KNOW: Arizona Girls and racism to Politics and Primaries

    in Social Networking

    Two Hot Topics:

    1) Racisim in Schools

    A recent picture circulating around social media showing six white girls in Arizona posing with the "N" word spelled out on their t-shirts has caused quite a firestorm.  What does this inicident, and others like it, say aobut race in America?  It's not the racism of old.  So....what is it??

    2) Politics and Primaries

    The Iowa caucuses were February 1, 2016 and, in case you haven't been paying attention, Republicans Ted Cruz, Donald Trump and Marco Rubio were the clear victors on the GOP side.  As predicted, Hillary Clinto and Bernie Sanders made a showing on the Democrat side.

    Joining me to talk about these topics is Dru Ealons, the National Director of Advocacy and Public Policy for Mocha Moms, Inc., the nation's leading voice for mothers of color, and founder and CEO of the Ealons Group, a consulting firm in the DC area.

    Hybrid Jazz From Trish Hennessey - with KENYA!

    in Music

    First, let's thank awesome promotions "star", Jason Gorov, for the introduction!  Jason sent "Let Me" by Kenya in 2015 and yours truly listened HARD.  That song popped off the page.  Then, hearing other tracks from "My Own Skin" was more confirmation.  During the holiday season, our guest's take on "Little Drummer Boy" knocked dozens of socks OFF all over the country and the world.  Kenya was on a mission to convey that treasured piece in HER way - and we felt the emotion.

    This enterprising artist has been working hard for some time.  Not only a superb vocalist (trained by the same legendary coach as Dianne Reeves), Kenya is also a songwriter, clinician, educator and Mom.  She knows how to balance the plates in the air - and shows up EARLY, if you dig what that means ;)

    A native of Denver, this powerhouse had a Dad who made SURE that she appreciated Jazz.  Calvin McGuire used to be a drummer and worked alongside Marvin Gaye.  Growing up, she heard Billie and Grover - but she also was drawn to Minnie Riperton and Stevie Wonder.  HE was a true inspiration.  Jazz, Soul and Pop/Rock - Kenya appreciated The Police and Robert Palmer, too.  Her love of music and her ability resulted in participation in city-wide choirs in middle school.  At Howard University in D.C., she was involved in the esteemed Gospel choir there.

    With a Bachelor's in Physical Therapy and a Masters in Counseling and Student Development, she had all the tools that she needed to succeed financially.  But she missed music.  A life-changing retreat in Sedona, Arizona, paved her renewed spiritual journey.  After two EPS - now, "My Own Skin", Kenya is exactly where she needs to be.  Success on multiple charts is God's way of letting her know that the world is READY!  Join us on 2/2 - and meet Kenya!

    Bowie Exits; El Chapo in The Interview 2 & More-Afronerd, Fri@7:30pm EST

    in Politics Conservative

    Howdy!  Don't forget to set your clocks for yet another funky information based episode of The Week in Review podcast, thanks to the Afronerd Radio Machine!

    Join Dburt and Capt. Kirk this Friday at 7:30pm EST as they shine a metaphysical flashlight on the following (mid) week issues: iconic rocker/musician/actor, David Bowie passes this mortal plane at the age of 69 from cancer; our impressions of the controversy hovering around actor, Sean Penn, who was able to garner an interview from alleged drug lord and fugitive, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman; Wu tang frontman, RZA not only has adopted the vegan lifestyle but has a message for young Black men (hint: a conservative appearance might not be a bad thing); Dburt marvels at a prototype personal passenger drone called Ehang 184-George Jetson would be proud;

    Is Hillary starting to feel the Bern?  Is Trump losing Cruz control? Hmmm; getting back to something we missed during the last episode.....just what was Maine Governor LaPage talking about? D-Money, Shifty and pregnant White girls?; The Afronerd crew are scheduled to make an appearance at this weekend's upcoming Black Comic Festival, courtesy of Harlem, NY's Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture; The Root asserts that the upcoming Keanu Reeves' film, Exposed (co-starring hip hop legend, Big Daddy Kane) displays another case of White-washing an originally minority themed project. And lastly, another Root piece unpacks the notion that it is not a given that Black Millenials will give their vote to the Democrats this electoral season like generations past.  Call in live at 646-915-9620.
