This week Laurie Beth is interviewed about her new book, "The Contessa Chronicles". While this is Laurie's latest book to be released, it is one that she has carried in her heart for many years. It springs from pondering the many scriptures that don’t resonate with modern times and understanding. From questions that are raised and then left unanswered. As a nun once asked in Berkeley, “Is God really just an old man, a young man, and a bird?” Why are women so easily erased and condemned in scripture? Why are the Wisdom passages so overlooked? Why is the Holy Spirit, presented as a feminine noun in Hebrew, so quickly reassigned a new gender in subsequent translations, leading to a male dominated culture in religion that belies common sense, as well as demographics?
Meanwhile, where’s the fun? The joy? The vibrancy that exists in life and yet seems almost non existent in the stories we are told about God?
Ultimately, Laurie Beth has come to believe two major things. One is that the Bible is a Love Story, largely of unrequited love. Two. That Jesus was a family man in the very largest sense. He spoke constantly about the love he had for his father. He called us his brothers and sisters. With his dying breath he asked that his mother be loved and cared for after he was gone. He invited us to come home with him, and feast at the banquet table. He said he would send the Holy Spirit to finish the work he started.
And even in Revelations, “The Spirit and the Bride say ‘Come.’” The very real possibility of a wedding exists, even though Armageddon has gotten a lot more air time.
And so we present to you, The Contessa Chronicles. A new imagining of how it might have been, and maybe even, really is, if we are open to tasting some new wine, and are willing to saddle up our own horses for the ride.

Join The Arc of Luzerne County for a conversation about 'making minds handicap accessible' with Mike Berkson and Tim Wambach, of the two-man show "Handicap This!"
In 2001 Mike Berkson met Tim Wambach. Mike has cerebral palsy and virtually no movement of his arms and legs, thus limiting his control and independence. Tim was hired to be Mike’s one on one aide when Mike was 12. Through the years the relationship grew and their bond became stronger. In 2005, their story, ‘How We Roll’ was released. They understood that people were not aware of the experiences the physically handicapped community face. Then, they came up with a crazy idea... Tim would embark on a cross-country 31 day run to raise awareness about people living with a physical disability that would begin at Disney World and end at Glenbrook South High School where Mike was a junior. Tim’s motivation was to make more people aware of cerebral palsy, and it was a resounding success.
As a result, they created the Keep On Keeping On Foundation, to help those living with severe physical disabilities. The publicity that they received helped spawn a speaking career for Mike and Tim to tell their story to a wide range of groups. Their speaking success ultimately gave the pair the opportunity to spread their message of tolerance and inclusion thru their live two-man show called “Handicap This!” which premiered in 2010.

SHOW NOTES: Our episode today is, “Is The Size of Your Vocabulary Limiting The Size of Your Paycheck?”
Whoa! Do words matter that much? I was teased as a kid in school for "using big words" and "reading too much" (it was not fun being teased and taunted). I have a lifelong love of words and reading. I was not popular when I was growing up, especially when I would rudely "correct" people for using or pronouncing words inaccurately (so don't do this!). I am naturally biased to want to believe that all of the teasing had a silver lining and that there is a benefit to having larger vocabularies. That does not mean it is true, just that I would love for it to be true as it would make me feel better. So, as we discuss in many of our programs, what does the data tell us?
Why is vocabulary important (for my income)?...
