30-On The Record: You Only Fail When You Quit

    in Business

Tracy Newman started playing guitar at 14 with dreams of becoming a folk singer.  In the early 70s, she joined an improvisation class taught by Gary Austin, which became The Groundlings.   Tracy is a founding member, and besides being in the show, she began teaching and directing there. Her sister, Laraine Newman was the first Groundling to be discovered there by Lorne Michaels for Saturday Night Live.

It was at the Groundlings that Tracy met her future TV writing partner, Jonathan Stark. They started on Cheers, and worked on many shows, including Bob (Bob Newhart), The Nanny, Ellen, The Drew Carey Show and Hiller and Diller (Richard Lewis and Kevin Nealon.)

In 1997, they won the Emmy and the prestigious Peabody Award for writing the ground-breaking -coming out- episode of Ellen. In 2001, they created the ABC comedy, According to Jim, which recently completed it’s eighth and final season of production.

Tracy has been writing songs all along and is once again performing full-time. She has three CDs:  “A Place in the Sun,” “I Just See You” and “I Can Swing Forever,” (which is for children).

Hybrid Jazz From Trish Hennessey - with Carol Albert and Slim Man!

    in Music

Where to begin about a blonde beauty from Georgia who inherited a love of music from her Grandmother?  How about THERE? ;)  Carol Albert learned so much as a tiny girl - not only how to play piano but the feel for composition.  Her Grandmom dreamed of songs in her sleep.  And, even though she lost her arm to cancer, this beloved woman passed along musical knowledge that still inspires Carol today.  Classically trained, she has toured Europe several times - she is quite popular overseas.  Her previous albums have garnered attention.  And this multi-faceted artist has played in front of an unbelievable array of household names - including Muhammed Ali, Jerry Lewis, and Henry Kissinger.  Her new work is called "Christmas Mystique" - and you will be brought to your knees by the serene atmosphere that it creates for your soul.  Carol joins us in the first hour of the show!

Our long-time friend, Slim Man, visits as well!  You know the story that we love to tell - about Mr. Camponseschi bringing little Timoteo to the movies when he was five.  There, he saw "The Five Pennies" - and Louis Armstrong rocked his world. The future "Slim Man" would study trumpet - then teach himself how to play piano and guitar.  After formal education at Peabody in Baltimore, Tim/Slim was signed to Motown and his songs were recorded by The Temptations, Angela Bofill and more.  He formed the group, Boot Camp, favored in the early days of MTV.  And a failed partnership with another artist paved the way for his OWN success - when he re-recorded songs for his "End of the Rainbow" introduction to us (insert heart here) :)  Now, with a string of popular albums - including the beloved "Christmas Eve" - Slim is anxious to let us know about a special event AND his new cookbook!  We'll have wassail in the Chat Room.  Ha Ha!  Join us!

Paul Harrop, Videojournalist for AOPA on Aviation and Storytelling

    in Entertainment

Paul Harrop, Producer/Videojournalist for AOPA Live. Today, Paul, Video-journalist for the largest aviation organization in the world, AOPA. Paul shares his passion for story telling and aviation.

The Oklahoma native comes from a long line of pilots. His father, grandfather and an uncle were all pilots. He grew up fascinated with two things: Aviation and Storytelling.

After graduating from the Kravis Broadcast Institute, Paul began his television career at a production company in Oklahoma City as a project manager. From there, the news bug bit, and he became a freelance field producer and photojournalist. Working with the cable networks, the big stories took him all over the place; from wildfires on the Great Plains to Hurricane Katrina and even the Michael Jackson trial.

In 2006 he made the jump into local news at KSWO 7 News in Lawton, OK before spending nearly three years at KOCO Eyewitness News 5 in Oklahoma City covering breaking news and severe weather. While there he took part in projects that earned a Peabody Award in 2008, an Edward R. Murrow Award in 2009 and an Emmy Award in 2010.

Paul served for several years at KAUZ Newschannel 6 in Wichita Falls, TX. He started as the Morning Co-Anchor and was bumped up to the role of evening Reporter. His powerful brand of visual storytelling and watchdog reporting earned the trust of Texas. Something Paul will always be proud of.

He is also an award-winning storm chaser, and has been an FCC-licensed Ham Radio operator (call sign WX5USA) since 1999. Paul is currently working towards becoming a pilot.  http://www.AOPA.org/ThisWeek
