In January 2014 I did a show about Blackfish, the eye-opening documentary that uncovered and exposed SeaWorld for decades of animal abuse, neglect and kidnapping baby orca whales from their beloved families in the world's oceans. This was a very powerful 'first show of the year' that touched so many of you.
Since it's release and continued airings on CNN, Blackfish has been causing major waves at SeaWorld, including rapid declines in attendance and ticket sales and collective debates as to whether or not orca's belong in captivity. Millions of people from around the world have got onboard The Blackfish Effect, and continue to spread the world about the documentary in hopes of one day shutting down SeaWorld and releasing the orca's back into their natural environment.
Former SeaWorld trainer Samantha Berg (who was featured in the Blackfish movie) talks with us about her thoughts on Blackfish, SeaWorld and what will likely be the future for the beloved Tilikum. Samantha was most generous with her time and spent nearly 20 minutes with us when we were only scheduled for 3-5 minutes! Thanks again Samantha! For a remainder of the show, we'll opened up the phone lines to hear from you, and your thoughts about Blackfish & SeaWorld. Oh yes, and my Mother makes an appearance....

Alex Louise Dorer of Fins and Fluke and Mini Krishnan of Orca United will join me to talk about the upcoming Marineland Protest: Free Kiska on Saturday, May 31 at 11:00am at MarineLand Canada 7657 Portage Road, Niagara Falls, Ontario L2E 6X8.
Since the release of the documentary "Blackfish", there has been a huge momentum to help liberate captive orcas across the world from inadequate living conditions at marine parks. Kiska is the last captive orca in Canada, and has been named as the saddest and loneliest in the world. This event will highlight the issues of marine mammal captivity and will focus on calling for Kiska's release to a seapen or more suitable home with other orcas. It will be to draw in more support in closing down Marineland, and will follow a protest on May 17 to help to continue the pressure on the park. All are welcome to join!
In listening to "Evolve", you can tell just how far and deeply felt the journey of Jackiem Joyner has been. Our award-winning saxophonist (and MULTI-instrumentalist) is so much more than you might have known. Raised in the roots of the Christian Church, you heard Jackiem explore his spiritual side on "Church Boy" from two years ago. He was finding his way through the myriad of other musical influences via his three previous efforts. Now, with his fifth release, he is clearly confident, persuasive and stronger than ever about his future.
Start to finish, these eleven tracks - all written and produced by Jackiem - offer a glimpse of who's around him, who has inspired him and what's important to him. Gerald Albright has been a hero for some time - and he's here on the song, "Big Step." Jackiem tours with Keiko Matsui when he's not leading his own band - and she is featured on a song that he wrote with her in mind, "Europa." His touring band plays with him on "Evolve" - and it makes such a difference in passion and artistry!
Our guest has had such a wonderful background...born in Norfolk, Virgina - with high school experience in upstate New York. Chosen to be Music Director for the "World Harvest Outreach Ministries" while still very young. With Marcus Johnson for three years...recommended highly by Angela Bofill for a pivotal tour that guaranteed even MORE fans - fans that have stayed through every project that Jackiem has created.
"Lil Man Soul" has been able to tour all over the world - side-by-side next to those whose music he had lived while he was growing up, dreaming. Najee, Kirk Whalum, the late and great George Duke...and he isn't even 35 yet! So much more to come - and this chart-topping artist is READY! That's why the CD is called "EVOLVE." :

Mary J. Getten has been connected to animals all her life. Whether rescuing and rehabilitating sick or injured seals and seal lions, swimming with wild dolphins and whales, or leading whale-watch trips, interaction with wild marine mammals has been a focal point of her life for over 25 years. Mary’s Nautilus Award winning book, Communicating with Orcas; The Whales’ Perspective offers a rare multi-dimensional view of orca life and consciousness. She also is a contributing author of Dolphins and Whales Forever.
Since 1996, Mary’s work as an animal communicator has helped thousands of happy clients worldwide understand and create more harmony with their naughty, sad, sick and puzzling pets. In fact, she’s communicated with everything from snails to whales! Mary also excels at teaching animal and nature communication workshops.
Mary has worked with marine mammals for more than 25 years. During the 80’s she worked at The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, California, where she rescued, rehabilitated and released a variety of seals, sea lions and small cetaceans. In 1990, Mary moved to the San Juan Islands in Washington and worked in the research department of The Whale Museum, was a coordinator of the San Juan County Marine Mammal Stranding Network, and served at Wolf Hollow Wildlife Rehabilitation Center for ten years as a volunteer, board member, bookkeeper, and even as Executive Director. As a young turk on the contemporary jazz scene, saxophonist Jackiem Joyner is far from complacent and staid in his sound and style. Not afraid to challenge the fan base that took him to No. 1 twice and Top 3 two more times on the Billboard chart, Joyner gets adventurous on his fifth album, “Evolve,” which will be released April 29th by Artistry Music/Mack Avenue Records. It’s his first on which he wrote and produced the entire set, including the first single going to radio in mid-March, “Generation Next,” an up-tempo urban-pop track with vibrant flashes of strings that provide a contrast to Joyner’s gentle melodic sax.
Juxtaposing invigorating otherworldly sonicscapes under tender sax melodies, “Evolve” is a dynamic, highly-rhythmic session that is unpredictable laced with traces of the familiar. Listening will take you to a different place while defining Joyner as a musician and a writer beyond what we have already heard from the chart-topping rhythm and groove guy. The imaginative new set has a greater purpose with the introductory single, “Generation Next,” serving as “a declaration that the next generation of jazz musicians is here to stay.

The imaginative new set has a greater purpose with the introductory single, “Generation Next,” serving as “a declaration that the next generation of jazz musicians is here to stay. Music evolves, including jazz. All types of sound evolve. So do people and our imaginations. That is what I tried to put on tape. ‘Evolve’ captures the changes in my musical mind and how I have evolved as an artist. Rather than fitting in with the traditional, I’m bringing the audience along with songs that unfold over different and interesting soundscapes even as I move towards a live organic sound,” explains Joyner.
In addition to playing alto and soprano sax on the record, Joyner is a multi-instrumentalist who played many of the instruments heard on the collection along with a couple of high-profile assists from Grammy-nominated sax player Gerald Albright and internationally-renowned keyboardist Keiko Matsui. The collaborations are noteworthy for different reasons. When Joyner was in high school, Albright was his idol thus dueting with him on “Big Step” was a thrill. Joyner tours in Matsui’s band when not performing his own dates and wrote “Europa” with her mind. On a few tracks, he was joined by his touring band – guitarist Kayta Matsuno, bassist Tim Bailey, keyboardist Bill Steinway and drummer Raymond Johnson – to record live in the studio.
