You know, I wanted to give you some sort of description of our guest for the next "Hybrid Jazz." And what's alongside the title of the show IS appropriate. But Karla Chisholm (pronounced CHIS em) is way more than what she has been described as being. When you hear her, you'll have your OWN thoughts.
Karla has loved the influence of Nancy Wilson and Shirley Horn in her life. But she also 'feels' Jason Mraz, Jill Scott and Carole King. She came to the Baltimore/DC area by way of the South and Midwest - so she has all of that charm and earthiness in her demeanor and delivery. She has learned a thing or two about love and that translates - in the joy of discovering romance or in "losing control" (the actual title of a Karla song - a fan favorite).
Two albums have delighted us: "Live at Domenico's" and "Moving On." Now, a third is about to sweeten the sound around you. "Songs On a Sunday" was recorded live at Howard County Community College, where Karla is a voice instructor. With trusted friends and musicians backing her, she moves effortlessly from one beloved song to another, making you appreciate both the origin of the tune - and the joyous manner in which it is reclaimed.
This is a woman who has recorded with and/or opened for The Wilsons - Mary and Charlie (LOL!), Robin Thicke and Stevie Wonder. She has toured and sang around the world and played for Barack Obama at his second Inaugural. She is as comfortable in front of thousands as she is in front of ten. Each person present gets a gift: Karla Chisholm :)
Having known our former Texas coffeehouse manager for a few years now, I can say with some authority that she is the real deal. A beautiful woman, inside and out. In love with people and music. Listen!

Have you ever lost a loved one and felt such despair that you did not know what to do or how to handle your grief? Grief and loss is a subject very often avoided and so desperately in need of being addressed. Join Liz Dawn as she talks with Karla Kay, author of Grief, The Universal Emotion of Loss.
In 2003, Karla Kay lost her husband, daughter and her surviving daughter’s best friend when the vehicle she was driving had a blow out and rolled out of control. Karla had worked for Hospice since 1994 and supported hundreds of people in their grieving, yet in her search, found little relief from her profound, horrific, sudden losses and the subsequent Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD) that she and her surviving teen daughter struggled with. Karla will share her own process as she healed from her own grief and talks about what each of us can do when going through a traumatic loss. http://karlakay.us/
