In this episode, Karen Rigatti discusses how self-esteem is an important part of the expat experience. Often couples have conflicts when the stay-at-home partner feels isolated while the other has the regular routine provided by a job and colleagues. Overwhelm is a common problem for a non-Italian spouse who has to rely on the Italian partner for large parts of her life that she previously managed herself.
In her English-speaking counseling practice in Milan, Italy, Karen Rigatti helps couples with relationship issues, parenting of a new baby and culture shock and other challenges faced by expats. As a certified professional counselor, she specializes in working with clients on stress management, anxiety, life transitions (marriage, divorce, new parenthood), work-related conflicts, couples therapy, and cross cultural issues. Her office is centrally located in the Bocconi University area, overlooking Parco Ravizza.
Karen has made Milan her home since 2008. Originally from the US, she specializes in helping other English-speakers improve their quality of life through professional counseling.
Originally from Arlington, Virginia, Karen graduated with a degree in Psychology from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. She transferred to San Francisco and then London, before moving to Milan where she lives with her two daughters who were born here.
Prior to opening her counseling practice, she led the European Recruiting team at the London office of international law firm Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe and she began her career in mental health as Admissions Director of Behavioral Health at Northern Virginia Doctor’s Hospital.
Karen is a member of both the American Counseling Association and AssoCounseling in Italy, holding a Master’s degree in Counseling from the Centro Berne in Milan.

Karen has had a love for words since she has been able to speak. Her passion began with her competitive classroom spelling Bees. Her love for speaking continued into high school when she placed third in a state public speaking competition for VOCA. Her dad proudly displays the plaque on his wall to this very day. She never saw her passion developing into what she can only describe today as an amazing blessing.
Karen has worked in the medical field for 25 plus years and continues to do what she does best, be a support system for others and provide comfort to them.
She has combined her love and passion to create books of entertainment while touching on real life situations. Karen's first title, Grey Family Preys was published in June 2013, via Amazon Kindle as well as paperback, and touches on child molestation. She later signed with World Haven Agenda for a short period before gracefully departing with the publishing group.
Karen is now the entrepreneur of Pensive Publishing, a small publishing company that she began in June 2014, and delivered She Me We, as the first title, her short story. This story touches on D.I.D/Multiple Personalities, but delivers entertaining fictional characters that you will love.
Karen D. Neal is on her way to becoming a household name and give all praises to God.

Karen A. Lehman is the Executive Director of the Episcopal Actors' Guild of America (EAG). Founded in 1923, EAG is a charitable organization that provides emergency assistance and career support to local, professional performers "of all faiths, and none."
Professionally, Karen has spent her time pursuing two passions: being of service and the performing arts. After graduating from the University of Delaware, Karen worked in Student Affairs for both SUNY and Pennsylvania State University, as well as with Libetae, a woman's halfway house in her home state of Pennsylvania.
During this time, Karen also continued to perform on stage, eventually moving to New York to study at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre, and working as an actress for several years after that.
In 2006, Karen's two passions were brought together in one job when she was hired as the Assistant Director of EAG. Shortly after, in 2008, Karen was named Executive Director. Under her leadership, EAG has greatly expanded its programs and services to include The Headshot Project (free, professional headshots for clients of EAG) and The Actors' Pantry, which provides groceries to EAG clients and their families.
As Executive Director, Karen has also established a very active volunteer program as well as a successful program for Young Professionals.

When adult children with aging loved ones start working the family on planning for the future they comment, “On, this will be interesting because my family does not get along”. This is a red flag that this family maybe dealing with dysfunction from their earlier years. There may have been the presence of alcohol, emotional distance, unclear boundaries and a lack of communication. As a friend explained her childhood, “It was like walking on eggshells.”
A functional family can more easily address the decline of their parent because they were raised to solve problems a group. They communicate well, that does not mean they can place their parent in an assisted living without emotions.
This radio segment will delve into the traits of functional and dysfunctional families along with solutions for families caring for their senior.
