James Love the Destroyer on Recovery Now with Kim Justus

    in Health

Fifteen years ago Phil White couldn’t use a fork or even speak after having emerged from a heroin overdose induced coma.  When he awoke, it was discovered he had suffered catastrophic damage to his brain. But this month after years of rehabilitation, Phil has published his first book  James Love the Destroyer. www.facebook.com/jameslovethedestroyer

Writing is a talent he has had since high school, but he feared it was lost after his drug overdose, which left him with severe nerve damage in his leg, memory problems, and difficulty following complex step-by-step tasks. He credits reading, writing, and strong family support with helping his brain heal.

“I think the brain can rewire itself and relearn to do things if rehabilitation trains new pathways to take shape to replace old ones. I want it to give hope to other brain injury patients that they can recover."

Brain Injury Connection on Recovery Now With Kim Justus

    in Health

After a TBI, where Deb Palmer lost consciousness over asphalt, resulting in a subdural hematoma and subarachnoid hemorrhage, she was diagnosed with a seizure disorder and major depression.  She knew she fell and hit her head, that something was wrong, but didn’t know what. She kept thinking it would go away with more sleep.  Nobody referred her to any resources for help or support.  Doctors obviously weren’t trained on how to address the long-term sequelae of brain injury or how to help someone who has had one.  Deb didn’t want what happened to her to happen to others.

Deb decided to turn anger into something constructive; and, with the help of other survivors and some professionals, published  five free newsletters to educate about brain injury.  The demand for the publication was greater than expected so she decided to form a nonprofit organization. Thus, the Brain Injury Connection (BIC) was born. www.braininjuryconnection.org
