This Thursday on Fieldstone Common we will speak author Juliet Haines Mofford about her book The Devil Made Me Do It! Crime and Punishment in Early New England.
Whether it was Sabbath-breaking, blasphemy, or public drunkenness, colonial laws were strict and frequently broken, and those who broke them could expect swift punishment. Laws were designed to reflect Puritan ideas of ensuring God’s blessings upon the community, as well as to tightly maintain order in ways that would benefit the entire colony. Each neighbor had a role in preserving family values and keeping the community safe from “railing scolds,” vagabonds, malefactors, and malefic witches.
Some of the ways that seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century New England communities dealt with murder and mayhem seem brutal to modern sensibilities. Today, Joan Andrews would not be forced to wear a T for theft upon her bodice for placing stones in the firkin of butter she sold a client. And Lydea Abbot would certainly not be made to suffer in the stocks for “uttering ten profain curses.”
Drawing from early court dockets, diaries, sermons, gaolers’ records, and other primary sources, the chapters in this book investigate crimes like these and illuminate the social and political causes behind legal cases from a time when accused felons often pleaded in their own defense: “The Devil made me do it!”
Juliet Haines Mofford is a historian and museum educator based in Maine. Two of her eleven books received national awards . Her feature articles have appeared in the Boston Globe and many other publications.

Silently Seizing is a breakthrough new book that explores what most doctors won’t tell you about autism that in some cases, the symptoms of autism are caused by seizures that are undetectable with standard diagnostic tools. The stealth relationship between autism and seizures has been hidden until very recently, and today, innovative clinicians and researchers acknowledge that in order to accurately diagnose autism, it is imperative to look for seizure activity in the brain. It is a sad fact that many children diagnosed with autism do not receive effective treatment because the seizure element is not addressed. The doctors who have generously shared their wisdom in this book all of whom are noted experts in their fields have seen first-hand that children show measurable gains when treated early for seizures. Many such children actually end up “losing” their autism diagnosis, replacing it with a diagnosis of temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), which is easily manageable with the right medications. If an unrecognized seizure disorder turns out to be the culprit, then treating it can produce a miracle of healing. Up to 50% of all children diagnosed with with autism have undiagnosed seizure disorders, to a great extent because they are difficult to diagnose and due to a lack of awareness and understanding. Caren Haines, with renowned behavioral child neurologist Nancy Minshew, MD, is determined to change that. At age two, author Caren Haines' son was diagnosed with autism. By the time he was 12, his diagnosis didn't account for his uncontrollable aggression, the acrid smells that lingered in his mind and the odd voices that screamed at him from inside his head. By the time he was 18, his out-of-control behavior mirrored a mood disorder with psychotic features. Silently Seizing begins with a close-up look at this family's journey and examines a disorder that cannot always be identified in a clinical setting.
Tonite we are going to discuss what maybe the "freebies" given to to students in the public education system. Recently, students in the 9nth grade of the Parsippany District were given ipads. One of the reasons behind the iPad initiative is because New Jersey is rolling out the new “Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers,” or PARCC exam, in the fall of 2014. “For the PARCC exam, students will have to take it on a digital device,” said Haines. Because grades 10-12 will not be provided an iPad, those students will still “be taught skills that will help them with PARCC digital testing.” This has some of the parents in the district up in arms.

Meet author Bill Johnson. Bill will be my guest on the Author Chat Show on Sunday June 29th to promote his new book: A Story is a Promise & The Spirit of Storytelling.
About the book:
Bill Johnson's writing workbook has three sections, each designed to help new and experienced authors alike to better understand the craft of storytelling. A Story is a Promise explores the mechanics of how a story transports an audience. Deep Characterization explores what happens when story characters are an extension of authors. The Spirit of Storytelling suggests techniques for authors to create characters with fully realized inner lives; characters who are vibrant, dynamic, and resonate with readers. The book includes an outline of The Lovely Bones and detailed reviews of Romeo and Juliet (the play), The Heidi Chronicles (play), The Shawshank Redemption The Usual Suspects (movies), and The Exorcist (novel). These reviews are meant to help writers understand the underlying process that creates popular stories. From author Carolyn J Rose, "Bill's work made me take a longer look at what matters to readers - and what matters to me as a reader - at the emotional core. I feel my characters are deeper and more memorable because of what I learned."
About the author:
Bill Johnson is author of A Story is a Promise and The Spirit of Storytelling, a writing workbook. Bill's writing workbook reviews popular movies, novels and plays to explore principles. His book helps writers learn how to write a novel or write a screenplay.
