This Thursday on Fieldstone Common we will speak author Juliet Haines Mofford about her book The Devil Made Me Do It! Crime and Punishment in Early New England.
Whether it was Sabbath-breaking, blasphemy, or public drunkenness, colonial laws were strict and frequently broken, and those who broke them could expect swift punishment. Laws were designed to reflect Puritan ideas of ensuring God’s blessings upon the community, as well as to tightly maintain order in ways that would benefit the entire colony. Each neighbor had a role in preserving family values and keeping the community safe from “railing scolds,” vagabonds, malefactors, and malefic witches.
Some of the ways that seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century New England communities dealt with murder and mayhem seem brutal to modern sensibilities. Today, Joan Andrews would not be forced to wear a T for theft upon her bodice for placing stones in the firkin of butter she sold a client. And Lydea Abbot would certainly not be made to suffer in the stocks for “uttering ten profain curses.”
Drawing from early court dockets, diaries, sermons, gaolers’ records, and other primary sources, the chapters in this book investigate crimes like these and illuminate the social and political causes behind legal cases from a time when accused felons often pleaded in their own defense: “The Devil made me do it!”
Juliet Haines Mofford is a historian and museum educator based in Maine. Two of her eleven books received national awards . Her feature articles have appeared in the Boston Globe and many other publications.

On last week's show, the big question was: Why is Bergdahls life worth more than Foley, Sotloff and Haines put together? As promised, I have been looking into this and hopefully have found AN answer to this question.
What was so special about the five top ISIS Militant extremists that were released in exchange for a man who is claimed, by his own colleagues, to be a deserter?
Would you be surprised to know that 3 of the five Commanders are alleged to be secret agents and the other two were resolute in their claims that they were working openly with the US? Naturally two of the five claim to have no allegaince to Al Qaeda.
Join me on this weeks show to hear more about this. Also I am asking the question:
Was Camp Bucca a prototype for FEMA camps all over the United States?
Do you know how many FEMA camps there is currently in situ across the US alone? You will be shocked to hear the truth.
The show is live at 9pm BST on Friday 26 September 2014. Please call to comment or just to listen. If you wish to listen only, please dial 1 when prompted. Listener dial-in number: (646) 716-6583. On this weeks show, I will be looking at ISIS and the recent beheading of 3 people, James Foley, Steven Sotloff and David Haines. ISIS have threatened to behead another Englishman and I for one would like to know what it's all about. Do you believe the videos are genuine? Why would ISIS kill these men, yet NOT show how they do it, when many many times before they have done just that? The US administration would have you believe that ISIS are the biggest threat to the west, but in fact, America has the backing of MANY countries, including their mortal enemy.
Also we have breaking information on the identity of 'Jihadi John', who is actually a rapper from London UK. Does knowing this guys identity nullify some of the fear and intimidation that ISIS hold onto so strongly?
After researching the topic, it seems to be very much the 'chicken and the egg' argument. ISIS want America to stay out of Iraq and America are planning to deploy more troops to combat ISIS because of what they have done to these men. What do you think the outcome will be?
“Among you there will be lying teachers who will bring in destructive sects . . . And many will follow their wanton conduct, and because of them the way of truth will be maligned.” - II Peter 2:1-2
The show is live, so please do call in with any comments or questions (646)716-6583. The show airs Friday 19th September at 9pm BST. Chatroom is open 10 minutes before the show airs. Please log in to use this facility
