John Carver Show - Pressed Pretty Thin

    in Self Help

I, first, shared this show when our daughter, Juliana, was going through cancer treatments for the 4th time.  I was having some pretty rough days dealing with seeing her go through so much health problems.

Some of what I share, in this show is:

Is it possible to increase your chances of "staging your breakthrough."

It has been said, “Fruit does not grow on mountaintops, but in valleys.”

“We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed and broken. We are perplexed, but we don’t give up and quit. We are hunted down, but God never abandons us. We get knocked down, but we get up again and keep going” (2 Corinthians 4:8-9) NLT

     C. M. Ward said, "…no two people are meant to carry identical loads."

The "Iron Sharpens Iron" principle says that if you have someone in your life that does not have similar objectives, goals, integrity and character than they will not be effective in sharpening you.

Sometimes we get "dull" in our life quests and we need someone with like-motivation to encourage us to keep going. If you have someone with no drive or who does not understand that life is lived "on purpose" they will not be effective in helping you over hurdles.

As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend. (Proverbs 27:17)

When we don’t have friends that challenge us and encourage us to grow, we grow dull.

John Carver Show - It Changed Everything

    in Self Help

    WHEN THE WINDS BLOW

“Years ago a farmer owned land along the Atlantic seacoast. He constantly advertised for hired hands. Most people were reluctant to work on farms along the Atlantic. They dreaded the awful storms that raged across the ocean, wreaking havoc on the buildings and crops. As the farmer interviewed applicants for the job, he received a steady stream of refusals.

Finally, a short, thin man, well past middle age, approached the farmer. "Are you a good farmhand?" the farmer asked him.

"Well, I can sleep when the wind blows," answered the little man.

Although puzzled by this answer, the farmer, desperate for help, hired him. The little man worked well around the farm, busy from dawn to dusk, and the farmer felt satisfied with the man's work.

Then one night the wind howled loudly in from offshore. Jumping out of bed, the farmer grabbed a lantern and rushed next door to the hired hand's sleeping quarters. He shook the little man and yelled, "Get up! A storm is coming! Tie things down before they blow away!" (LISTEN TO THE SHOW FOR THE REST OF THE STORY)

Trust impacts us 24/7, 365 days a year. It undergirds and affects the quality of every relationship, every communication, every work project, every business venture, every effort in which we are engaged. It changes the quality of every present moment and alters the trajectory and outcome of every future moment of our lives—both personally and professionally.

In business, trust is established through reputation.  Jesus has been our “brand” for some years and we still have trouble being an unpaid advertiser for Him.  Do we distribute Christ’s trust in the marketplace?  Look at EBAY…millions of people trust complete strangers EVERY year.

John Carver Show - The Unbreakable Human Spirit - Theo Androus

    in Self Help

I first heard Theo Androus back in 2003.  The Catholic Herald shares a little about Theo:

    "

On a Wednesday evening in 1999, the slightly built Androus took a shot at goal in a coed soccer game in Alexandria, but never saw the 6-foot 3-inch, 240-lb goalie who crashed into him. The impact shattered two bones beneath Androus’ knee into six pieces, causing "unbelievable pain," he recalled. He was taken to INOVA Alexandria Hospital where surgeons stabilized the fracture, inserting a titanium rod through the center of his tibia. Androus spent a month in bed and three months in a wheelchair recovering from the injury.

Androus, who wore leg braces as a child to correct a congenital condition and survived a head-on car crash on the George Washington Parkway in 1989, said he had to set a goal for himself in order to get well. His goal was running the 2000 Marine Corps Marathon.

"Life is about making choices," Androus told the assembly. As an Ireton student, he didn’t see the point of studying geometry or trigonometry and remembers begging math teacher Richard Bulcavage for a C, but publicly thanked him last week for giving him a D, the grade he deserved. Androus said he regretted never having had the chance to thank the late Coach James McGrath for his influence. "You have people here who care so much about you," Androus said."

John Carver Show - Directly from my Wife (Tammy)

    in Family

Many of you know that our youngest daughter, Juliana, has been attacked with cancer four times from 2007-2014.  Also, most of the time I am the one who updated Juliana's Angels for Juliana (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Angels-For-Juliana/250289225091998) Facebook page.  On this show my wife (along with a little commentary by Juliana) explains the details behind Juliana getting cancer four different times.  What I did was transferred parts of the YouTube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lnkg9fMME2w) video I did on Juliana and Tammy and put it in audio form for this show.

Juliana remains on chemotherapy and other medication as she continues to work hard to keep the cancer from coming back.

Thank you for ALL your prayers for Juliana and our family.  You can always email me at johncarver@wildblue.net

John Carver Show - When you Walk Out that Door...

    in Self Help

On May 3, 2015 I took my son Tim and daughter Juliana to see Avengers – Age of Ultron.  I believe most people live life on the DEFENSIVE instead of the OFFENSIVE!

Joshua 1:6-7,9 the Lord says three times to Joshua, "Be strong and courageous."

Many people, I have met, think life is a passive walk in the park.

“The hands that help are better far than lips that pray.” ? Robert G. Ingersoll, The Works of Robert G. Ingersoll, Vol. IV

“You have the choice to either pray then plan or pray and wait; but keep in mind miracles are usually accessed somewhere between the 11th hour and resurrection.” ? Johnnie Dent Jr.

Repeating - Clint Barton: [to Wanda] If you step out that door, you're an Avenger.

Jesus story about the man who built his house on the sand.  The houses looked almost alike except for the foundation.

Matthew 7:24-27New American Standard Bible (NASB)

    The Two Foundations

24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and [a]acts on them, [b]may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the [c]floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. 26 Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not [d]act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 The rain fell, and the [e]floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell—and great was its fall.”

“Rain” and “wind” are GOING TO HAPPEN!  How are you going to build your house?

The man who built his house on the sand may have been lazy and didn’t want to do the “hard work” of digging into the rock.
