Julian Walker and Tyra B MRTR

    in Pop Culture

    Celebrating Over 150 Episodes!

Hosts: Jamel, Derrick Dwayne and Flash Gotti

#MyRealTalkRadio interviews Blackbird Star: Julian Walker and Singer/Songwriter: Tyra B.

Rookie actor Julian Walker is the breakout star in the poignant new film, "Blackbird." The coming-of-age drama, based on the 1986 novel by Larry Duplechan, tells the story of Randy Rousseau, a saintly choirboy in small-town America struggling to reconcile his sexuality and conflicting religious beliefs.

Born and raised in Petersburg, VA, Tyra knew from a young age that she wanted to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. She started singing and dancing at talent shows in elementary school, and spent much of her free time practicing her craft. Her hard work paid off when, in 2004, at yet another one of these talent shows, a DJ from nearby Richmond was in the audience and decided to put her single, "Country Boy," on his radio show. Before too long she was a local celebrity, helped also by the success of her second single, "Still in Love," which led to an opening spot on Destiny's Child summer 2005 tour. Soon, she signed to Warner Bros., with plans made for her debut album, Introducing Tyra (which included the song "Get No Ooh Wee"), to be released. It wasn't until 2008, however, after yet another successful single, "Giving Me a Rush," hit the airwaves and television, that the singer, who was now calling herself Tyra B, issued her true debut, Past Due.

The Kerri Edelman Show presents Hard Rock/Metal Band Nonpoint

    in Rock Music

Nonpoint released their new studio album, The Return on September 30th 2014 via Razor & Tie.  The album was produced by Grammy nominated producer Johnny K (Disturbed, Staind, Megadeth) and Daniel Salcidoto. Nonpoint vocalist Elias Soriano explains, “Last record we stepped in a direction we've wanted to for years and our fans revered us for it.  This record we have gotten up to speed and dropped the pedal to the floor.  I think our fans will embrace this record in a way no other Nonpoint record has been viewed or loved.  We left no room for question of what we are trying to accomplish with our music or who we are. We haven't gone back to old school.  We didn't reflect on our past.  We didn't discuss what works. We are not "Statement" Nonpoint or even "Bullet" Nonpoint...... "The Return" is Nonpoint right now." Formed in 1997, Nonpoint has since released seven full-length albums and one live album selling over 800,000 albums in North America.  In late 2013, Nonpoint closed out a year of touring behind 2012’s self-titled record, which yielded the Active Rock radio hit “Left For You.” With over a decade of extensive road work under their belts, the band has toured with All That Remains, Mudvayne, Papa Roach, Sevendust, Disturbed, Flyleaf, Buckcherry, Drowning Pool, Stone Sour, and Hell Yeah and graced the stages of Ozzfest, Rock On The Range and Summerfest.  Now in 2014, their eighth full-length album The Return remains as raw, ripping, and real as these musicians—Elias Soriano [vocals], Robb Rivera [drums], Rasheed Thomas [guitar], Adam Woloszyn [bass], and B.C. Kochmit [guitar]. Pick up a copy of their amazing new album 'The Return' now featuring the hit single 'Breaking Skin.' For more information, visit nonpoint.com

Mason Stokes, Author of "Saving Julian" Thursday, April 23, 9PM EST

    in Books

Saving Julian is a darkly comic journey into the sad, strange world of ex-gay ministry.  The novel tells the story of Paul Drucker, a 58-year-old psychology professor and part-time preacher.  Author of Saving Our Boys from the Gay Menace, Paul is much in demand on the ex-gay lecture circuit, sharing the heterosexual gospel with those in need.  As he tells his audiences, “there’s no such thing as a gay man.  There are only men with unmet homoemotional love needs.  And this can be fixed.” But when Paul is caught with Julian, a 21-year-old “escort” he found online, he knows his world is about to fall apart.

At the age of twelve, Mason Stokes thought he was a New York Jewish intellectual.  Turns out he was just a gay southerner with a fondness for early-period Woody Allen.  But since both options would have gotten him beaten up, he made other choices, devoting himself to quiet study, courtly manners, and non-threatening outfits.

This led naturally to an English major (the last refuge of scoundrels), where he found himself obsessed with Russian literature, an obsession he abandoned after failing, on repeated tries, to make it more than halfway through The Brothers Karamazov.

Mason teaches at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York.  Saving Julian is his first novel.
