Juke Joint Jonny is a Blues man, band leader, singer, songwriter and historian.
Born in Newark, New Jersey in 1950, he was introduced at a very young age to the “Folk Blues” by  sharecroppers who moved North  and shared their music and culture in the ethnically diverse neighborhood of his youth.
Jonny has recently signed with Bluesleaf Records and his new release Pure and Simple was released this spring. The Album features 10 original songs by Jonn.
We will talk with Jonny and find out more about his life while checking out his tunes.
Then The 44's will join me.
A Los Angeles-based band who play blues-roots-rock music. The raw rough and tough sounds generated by these four musicians during live performances and in the making of their Sophomore album Americana, on the Rip Cat label, is pure California Blues.
The band consists of Johnny Main on vocals and guitar, Tex Nakamura on harmonica, bassist Mike Turturro and drummer J. R. Lozano.
We will chat with the guys and find out more about their lives while we listen to music from the band.

Walking through Birmingham, Alabama's rich history

    in Travel

Birmingham, Alabama - the Magic City - saw events and courageous people who played a central role in the Civil Rights struggle.  World Footprints goes on a walking tour through history along the Civil Rights Heritage Trail as we step onto the grounds where African Americans confronted Jim Crow era voilence with non-voilent civil disobedience.  We will also explore Kelly Ingram Park and Birmingham's 4th Avenue Business District and discuss the time when segregation made this the city's "Little Harlem".

Brimingham is also known for it's rich musicial traditions and we'll pay homage to two iconic musical figures:  Henry "Gip" Gipson whose 'juke joint' is the last standing music venue of it's kind in Alabama.  Gip's Place has welcomed musicians from all over the world and every Saturday music lovers travel miles for an all-night music tailgate party on a "Sanford and Son" style lot.  We will also introduce Dr. Frank Adams, Sr., a charter member of the Alabama Hall of Fame, who regaled us with stories of his life, a musical set and his time playing with greats like Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington.  Sadly, Doc Adams passed away only one month after our meeting with him.  We are honored to showcase  his music throughout today's show.

As a side note, our trip to Birmingham was a very pleasant surprise.   We highly recommend a visit to Birmingham, Alabama.  There's a lot waiting for visitors to discover in the city "where freedom lives".

  • Mondays at 8:00 - Authors Supporting Authors Presents Wesley Godfather Hunter

    in Writing

Times: 8:00 pm EST / 9:00 AST. Please check the time in your time zone.

Welcome to our Mondays at 8:00: Authors Supporting Authors series, brought to you as a joint project by authors April Thomas and Etienne A. Gibbs. Each week we shall interview authors about their work and the disciple behind their writing. Call 646-721-9611 during the show with your questions or comments.

This week's author: Wesley “Godfather” Hunter

Born and raised in the streets of Los Angeles, Mr. Wesley “Godfather” Hunter began his journey of gang-banging and crime at a very youthful age. By age 10 he’d already experienced his first arrest and stay in a jail cell. By the age of 12 he’d begun a career of incarceration, which has kept him physically imprisoned for most of his life. Yet, even in this, life has not left him bitter and he continues to strive, finding the strength within himself to overcome against the odds.

Now a 32 year-old aspiring author, currently incarcerated in the California Dept. of Corrections where he is serving out the remainder of a 20 year sentence for commercial armed robbery and 2 counts of attempted murder on sheriff’s deputies, Wesley has used his time wisley. Devoted to spreading the word of change/love and self-respect in his works and titles, he spends most of his time focused on positive writings, thoughts and goals geared towards improving himself, and giving something back to society in the form of insight, experience, and wisdom.

Mr. Godfather has written several novels and an autobiography but has since established his own Urban Diamonds Publishing to release his latest titles. He has started a youth help organization, “The Raw Truth”, to bring forth through the inner city churches and other youth-related programs.
