As many citizens across the country are reacting with anger to the Grand Jury's decision to file no charges against police officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of unarmed teen Michael Brown, there are those who have launched a proactive strategy in the fight for justice. Judge Stanley Hill has worked for the last several years coordinating the PUSH Excel Oratorical Contest, an event in which youth in grades 1 through 12 memorize some of history's most powerful speeches in the areas of peace and justice. Judge Hill coaches these youth and prepares them to compete in a stimulating and enjoyable rhetorical competition that focuses on the persuasive power of eloquent, inspirational speech. These are the perhaps future lawyers who will present arguments before courts and win cases. What better way to fight back against injustice than to prepare future leaders who can be the orators that awaken their peers to the principles of truth, honor, and righteousness? Some of those whose memorable speeches will be recited by students in the upcoming contest Saturday December 20, 2014 include President Barack Obama, Langston Hughes, Robert Frost, Nikki Giovanni, and The Girl Who Silenced the United Nations for Five Minutes. Judge Hill explains his motivation for empowering these youth with outstanding speaking skills, and what the memorization of such impressive words will do in shaping their character. Later, we'll be joined by organizers in Missouri who reflect on how to take the energy of anger in the protesters and use it to create constructive change across the country.
As the citizens across the country continue to react to the Grand Jury's decision in Ferguson Missouri to file no charges against police officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of unarmed teen Michael Brown,
Coming together in search God's Word for his wisdom will ground us.
The early Church dynamic:
They gathered together in homes, often in secret, reminding one another of God's promises, and relating Jesus' commands—to love God and others— to real life situations. They encouraged one another, challenged one another, and worked out what it feels like to be a Christian. Sherwin Simple is offering the same concept. In fact, he is doing exactly as it is in the Bible. God created us to live in a community—and especially to read & learn Scripture in a community. It's only together that we can accurately interpret and apply the Word. So if you don't currently participate in a small-group Bible study. Now is the perfect time to join in and listen to Simple Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth.
The 2014 Convocation keynote speaker was Stetson University double-degree alumna Judge Simone Marstiller. She welcomed incoming and returning students with a talk about Stetson University's positive influence on her life. Stetson, she said, is not just an academically outstanding institution of higher learning, it is a community and a family. "Stetson will nurture you, change you and prepare you for the path that is uniquely yours," she said.
Background on Judge Marstiller:
Born in Monrovia, Liberia, Judge Marstiller earned her Bachelor of Business Administration from Stetson University in DeLand, Fla., and her Juris Doctor, cum laude, from Stetson College of Law in Gulfport, Fla.
In 2010, then-Governor Charlie Crist appointed Judge Marstiller to the First District Court of Appeal. Her varied legal career, which began in 1996, has been exclusively in service to the State of Florida.
Judge Marstiller was serving as executive director for the Florida Elections Commission when she was appointed to the appellate court in 2010. She oversaw the investigation and prosecution of complaints filed with the commission and was the chief administrative officer for the agency.
Prior to that, then-Attorney General Bill McCollum appointed Judge Marstiller associate deputy attorney general for the State of Florida in 2007. She served on the executive management team for the Office of the Attorney General, while serving as the agency’s general counsel. She was responsible for overseeing four agency divisions, including the Civil Rights and Opinions Divisions.

Did you know There's a U.S. district court judge in Alabama who was arrested in August after his wife called 9-1-1 crying and being audibly beaten by her husband? The police report says the good judge blodied the woman's face and legs and dragged her around the room by her hair. On top of that, his first wife reports he did much the same to her during their marriage. So what's happening? What happens much too often in these cases: he took a plea deal that requires him to see a counsellor once a week for 24 weeks and the whole thing disappears from his record. The community wants him out. The fact is, this man was appointed a judge for life and unless he resigns or is impeached by the U.S. congress, he will still be on the bench hearing cases involving domestic violence and other crimes. And he will sit in judgement of others while his own messy background goes away. Huh?
That's right, no jail time, no conviction, even, eventually, no record of arrest. Is this a guy you want to stand before in a court of law?
This week we are welcoming Staci Zaretsky, an editor of ABOVE the Law, and a contributor to other legal publications such as Judgepedia, Lawyerist, and Ms. JD. Staci is a gruaduate of Lehigh University and Western New England University School of Law. She has been published in the Western New England Law Review. She is going to help us figure out what this case is about, how it compares to other domestic violence cases, and what's going on with Judge Mark Fuller.
Let's continue our Custody Wars conversation and get a lawyer's perspective. How do we prevent custody wars? What do we do if we are already in a custody war?
