The Total Tutor will interview The Executive Director of The Josh Gibson Foundation and Great Grandson of Josh Gibson, Sean Gibson. Sean will discuss the components of the foundation.
Sean L. Gibson is the great-grandson of Baseball Hall of Fame legend Josh Gibson. Sean has dedicated his life to the preservation of Josh's legacy and is the Executive Director of the Josh Gibson Foundation, a Pittsburgh area non-profit organization. The Josh Gibson Foundation was established in 1994 in an effort to keep the memory of Pittsburgh's beloved Josh Gibson and the entire Negro League alive. The foundation partners with Duquesne University by matching up college students with elementary and middle school youth for tutoring. The foundation also sponsors the Josh Gibson Little League.
There is likely no greater expert on the history of the Negro Leagues than Sean who speaks to a variety of groups throughout the year teaching on the significance of these great men who played the game before Jackie Robinson integrated baseball in 1947.
Josh Gibson, the man that many regard as the greatest Negro League player ever, was born on December 21, 1911 in Buena Vista, Georgia. He relocated to southwestern Pennsylvania in 1924 after his father found work in a Pittsburgh area steel mill. Josh began catching for the Pittsburgh Crawfords in 1927. With the addition of Gibson, the Crawfords rose to the top of the city's sandlot teams and challenged Cumberland Posey's Homestead Grays, a stellar club of Black professional baseball players from across the nation.
During Gibson's career, he played ball with Hall of Famers Oscar Charleston, Cool Papa Bell, Judy Johnson, and Satchel Paige. The Homestead Grays won an unprecedented nine consecutive Negro National League pennants with Gibson behind the plate.
Tune in to the ICC Morning Show where we'll give you the scoop on Chris Brown's alleged nine-month-old baby and what Karrueche Tran has to say about it.
We'll also fill you in on round three of Keyshia Cole vs. Booby Gibson and tell you why it's officially time for Mo'Nique to be quiet.
There are some artists who are just rooted in your soul..who make no bullshyt excuses.....who just get right down to it...Wil Gibson is THAT artist... I promise..
Wil Gibson was born from a good idea and a bottle of bourbon. He was raised in some of the poorest communities northern Illinois and eastern Arkansas have to offer. He now lives in Portland (the one in Maine) and likes it a lot there (you probably would too). He writes too many love poems and not nearly enough of his novel. A proud (mistake prone) father of four who tries real hard and is still growing up.
He has performed with or opened for; Regie Gibson (no relation), Charlie Neville, Brother Ali, mybrightestdiamond, Toki Wright, Patricia Smith, and Kurtis Blow (among others) in dive bars, high schools, colleges, poetry slams, libraries, living rooms, restaurants, prisons, coffee houses, and churches from Bellingham, Washington to Boston, Massachusetts and beyond.
He was runner up at the 2010 and 2011 Arkansas Grand Slam, audience favorite 2010 Arkansas Grand Slam, three time (2008-2010) Portland, Maine/Port Veritas Grand Slam Champion, 2010 New Hampshire/Slam Free or Die Grand Slam Champion, has represented Portland, Maine six times (2008-2012, 2014) at the National Poetry Slam, including the 2011 team that made semifinals.
He has toured nationally solo and as part of:
Uncomfortable Laughter (w/ Beau Williams, Kait Rokowski, and Ryan McLellan)
guyslikeyou (w/ Beau Williams and Ryan McLellan)
is an honorary member of Chicago 4 Star Poetry(w/ Billy Tuggle, Andi Kauth, Rik Vazquez, Melanie “George” Decelles, Ashley Hart, and Patricia Smith)
and is a founding member of the Port Veritas artist collective.
He likes people and dogs a lot. He would like to pet your dog, talk to you a few minutes, and possibly give you a hug if that’s ok.
