Jj Thames, Sugar Brown, Polly O'Keary & COUCH KID NEW MUSIC Tweed Funk

    in Music

J.J. Thames was raised in a blue-collar family.

J.J. began performing at the tender age of 9 years old, and became a blues- shouting banshee by the time she was just 18 years old.

She cut her teeth after moving down to Jackson, MS. Where she began to perform with the celebrated "Chitlin' Circuit superstars like; Marvin Sease.

J.J. and I will explore her roots and check out tunes from her album, Tell You What I Know.

Ken Chester "Sugar Brown" Kawashima was born in Bowling Green Ohio.

His attachment to the Blues came while he studied at the University of Chicago by day and prowled the blues clubs at night, backing artists such as Taildragger and "Big Eyes" Smith.

He now lives in Toronto, and his latest album is entitled Sugar Borwns Sad Day and Sugar and I will chat about his journey to where he is today while we listen to tunes from the album.

Polly O'Keary began playing music in bars in Mexico at 16, and after a early rock career that included a record deal, she fell in love with blues at 28.

She was first named Washington Blues Society Female Vocalist of the Year in 2004, and has won it twice more since then.

Her first and second albums were well-reviewed, and the second was named Album of the Year by the WBS, and Polly was named Songwriter of the Year.

She spent time touring with Too Slim & The Taildraggers and is now back in the Northwest with a new trio. Polly and I will discuss her career and listen to songs from her latest, Compass.

Tweed Funk originally came to The Couch back in April of 2012.  They return with their new album, First Name Lucky and we will find out what the band has in store for 2014 while we listen to cuts form the album.

Anniversary Returns and the Ultimate Reveal!

    in Entertainment

This week on Littany, we are covering both Days of Our Lives and The Bold and the Beautiful. A lot has happened on both shows and we can't wait to chat with fellow fans about what's working and what isn't.

In Days news, many fans were excited to learn that some longitme veterans will be returning to the show for the show's 50th Anniversary. Many wonder if the returns of these characters will breathe new life into a show which continues to focus on elephant statues and JJ and Paige's reconciliation (which continues to feel like one of the longest in Days' history).

On The Bold and the Beautiful we had a historic reveal that we will be dicussing more in-depth on Littany. Let's just say that The Bold and the Beautiful threw us all a major curve ball and we are excited to see where this particular story goes.

It's going to be a great show with non-stop discussion. Join the live chat or call-in during the show!

Celebrity Link- Featuring the great Voice great Reggae music ska and more

    in Music

1982 was a transition year for music. Sure, my friends and I still had all the Hall and Oates, Toto and Journey we could ever ever dream of hearing on the radio. But for kids in the pop cultural hinterlands of Utah where I lived, there was a new player on the scene. Her name was MTV and she was newly available on basic cable.

Why was MTV a she? She had to be. How else could you explain the David Bowie, Duran Duran, Cultural Club and Adam Ant videos she would soon unleash on our impressionable minds? No self-respecting Molly Hatchett or Van Halen fan wanted to watch that stuff.

Besides introducing us to new romantic bands from England, MTV was our gateway drug to bizarrely new and unexpected sounds like Toni Basil’s cheerleader- driven “Mickey” and today’s novelty song, “Pass the Dutchie” by Musical Youth. What was this song? Youth meets reggae on the shores of the Thames River? Whose brilliant idea was this?“Pass the Dutchie’ on the left-hand side’”

“How does it feel when you’ve got no food.”Who writes this stuff?

The deeper hidden meaning was debated daily by a small group of friends who were convinced we could unlock some deeper insight into reggae music or British pop music or black kids who wore berets and played oversized instruments and passed dutchies to their left but never to the right.

The riddle would all be revealed if we simply watched more MTV. So we did.Eventually “Pass the Dutchie” reached #10 on the Billboard Top 40 in 1982, making Musical Youth a one-hit wonder and leaving a pop-cultural mark that persists today.www.crsradio.com caribbeanradioshow@gmail.com
