Every year since 1963, the President of the United States has issued a proclamation announcing National Small Business Week, which recognizes the critical contributions of America's entrepreneurs and small business owners. More than half of Americans either own or work for a small business, and they create about two out of every three new jobs in the U.S. each year.
LIfe Lessons kicks off National Small Business Week with Jim Salmon, the head of Business Lending at Navy Federal Credit Union. Salmon shres how to start and grow a business, and he'll share information about programs designed to help military veterans run a successful business. A military veteran himself, Salmon will also discuss why it's good business to support veteran-owned and operated businesses and how veterans have many of the skills necessary to run a successful business.
We hear a lot about helping our brave veterans, but the sad fact is that despite an improving economy, many have difficulty finding employment after leaving the military. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), young male veterans, ages 18 to 24, who served during the Gulf War II era, including those who have served at any time since September 2001, had an unemployment rate of 21.9%(more than double the national average).

Lt. Colonel (retired) Jim Chambers joined the Army in 1969, and served as a Ranger in Vietnam. He started racing sailboats nearly 20 years ago; he and his boat SnowFox have won more trophies than he can count. Jim and I will talk about what led him to deliberately choose a career path filled with adversity, and how the lessons learned in his military career are relevant to facing other challenges on and off the water. I always love hearing his stories, and I think you will, too.
David Dusek, author of Rough Cut Men, joins Jim Paris Live to discuss his book and the unique challenges that men face today. Dusek says that most men are isolated and have nowhere to turn when facing life's challenges. He comments on the phenomenon of fatherless homes and the effect this is having especially in minority neighborhoods. He says every 18 hours a U.S. military veteran commits suicide. Dusek shares how his organization is reaching out to thousands of members of the military nationwide, and how can the church do a better job today ministering to men.
After experts said that it would be weeks, maybe even months before determining what happened in the Freddie Gray case, all six officers were charged in the Freddie Gray case. Jim shares his outrage about the rush to charge six Baltimore Police officers before any meaningful investigation could have taken place. Western Union enters into agreement with digital currency that some believe is the next Bitcoin, and what vintage electronic device is bringing big bucks on eBay?
