Guest host Eric Leushen and Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch join Jim Buzinski to discuss Michael Sam. Now that Sam has been drafted in the NFL by the St. Louis Rams, we look into his chances of making the roster and playing as an openly gay player. Sam made national news by coming out as openly gay in February.
On Saturday, he was taken in the 7th round by the St. Louis Rams and his kiss with his boyfriend became the talk of the sports world. Now that he has a team, the question will be whether Sam can make the Rams' roster.
Michael Sam accepted the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPYs with a speech that left people across America in tears. Sam expressed a clear understanding of his role in the LGBT sports movement and in changing our culture. We talk about the speech and the next, most crucial chapter in his story: St. Louis Rams training camp and making the team.
Plus, earlier this week Major League Baseball hired Billy Bean as their first Ambassador For Inclusion. Where does this put baseball in the race to be the most inclusive pro sports league in America?
Former Wisconsin and Kansas football player Brad Thorson came out publicly on Independence Day in a post on his blog titled "Seeing through the fog."
Thorson joins us to talk about his experiences in college football and his brief stint in the NFL with the Arizona Cardinals, his coming out process and the reaction he's received, and finding a home in the sports world with the San Francisco Fog gay rugby team. He'll be traveling to Australia for the Bingham Cup later this year.
Why Love Heals
Join Jim as he has an in depth conversation about self-healing and the power of thought with psychologist, researcher and best selling author Dean Shrock. Together we will discuss:
- Why every thought matters
- How to find and maintain the peace of mind necessary for good health.
- What is this thing called “Love”?
- How is science and quantum physics related to self-healing?
- The value of being “selfish”
- How to break the habit of doubt, even when you know better
In 1988 Dr. Shrock developed a wellness program whose purpose was to instill a greater “will to live” in cancer patients. While what he taught did affect a patient’s quality of life, Dr. Shrock was intrigued to find that it also extended their length of life. His experience and expertise led to a book in 2000 about this wellness program, Doctor’s Order’s: Go Fishing.. His 2009 bestselling book, Why Love Heals is about his research and discoveries and how to apply them to get well or stay well. He now lectures and teaches nationally.
“People who are busy doing what they like to do not only tend to forget their aches and pains, but experience a positive effect on their quality and length of life.”

“What you saw is what you got,” childhood friend, Roy Hamilton
Garner was born James Bumgarner but changed his name for Hollywood. His relatives say the name was the only thing that changed.
“As much as people liked what they saw of him on television and in the movies, I think they’d like him even better if they would’ve known him in person,” said nephew, Terry Bumgarner. Norman Transcript
