Im just gonna be honest with you, radio land. I forgot what episode of JAM SESSION this is, so this is the next episode. Im quite terrible at remembering things. That doesnt mean this episode of JAM SESSION isnt going to be something amazing, as is every show in my opinion. By the way, im Cole Vick, your host and comedy expert (novice).
Doctor Howard Fidler has decided to join this lovely show yet again. And when Fiddy is in the building, things get extremely technical
Our special guest is a woman who really touches my heart, which i can say about any woman who gets in the cage, but Jessica Phillipus REALLY touches mine. She is a woman who can take your soul, and sing to your heart before you even step on the scale with her. I am very proud to bring Ms. Phillipus to JAM SESSION as the final guest, because this is going to be something like the matrix, so take a pill and let the three of us take you to a wonderland.
There will be lots of other topics discussed, time permitting. There will also be minimal committment. I aimed for not going over the hour limit, but with the woman who we had, as well as the many things going on in the world of MMA, we may have surpassed that. This is JAM SESSION!!
Dr. Aikyna Finch and Jessica Leichtweisz will be joined on the Empowering Women Series by Miriam Ezell, Coach and Author, as she discusses, "Listen to Your Heart and Take Inventory." We, as women, fall into what Coach Miriam calls, “survival” mode. We take care of family. We allow others to fill our plates. We settle. We feel guilty when we don’t do what others think we should. We take on tasks that don’t fit our abilities and gifting and wonder why we are criticized for our work. We try to do it all. We take care of everyone else and put ourselves on the back burner, then we crash and burn. We lack confidence and listen to gossip, which only leads to hurtful feelings. Because of our frustration, we get sick, we gain weight, we get depressed, we no longer take care of our physical being. We no longer feel that we add value and we are not heard. The list goes on and we spiral down into a feeling of hopelessness. You do have a choice, you can stop the craziness, take inventory and begin again creating the life that you were meant to live. Call in at (949) 203-4763 or chat in at 9pm EST/ 8pm CST on 12/18 and join the conversation. http://www.blogtalkradio.com/changingmindsonline/2014/12/19/empowering-women-series--listen-to-your-heart-and-take-inventory

Compassion is a key motivator of altruistic behavior, but little is known about individuals’ capacity to cultivate compassion through training.
Now, through a recent scientific study, we've learned that it's possible to become a more compassionate person by training your brain.
Researchers from the Center for Investigating Healthy Minds at the University of Wisconson-Madison's Waisman Center found that engaging in compassion meditation -- where you practice feeling compassion for different groups of people, including yourself -- seemed to increase a sense of altruism.
"It's kind of like weight training," study researcher Helen Weng, a graduate student in clinical psychology at the university, said in a statement. "Using this systematic approach, we found that people can actually build up their compassion 'muscle' and respond to others' suffering with care and a desire to help."
Helen Weng is our guest this week on the Voice of Leadership, sharing more about this study and our ability to become more compassionate human beings.
The Half Has Never Been Told: Slavery and the Making of American Capitalism
Historian Edward E. Baptist reveals in The Half Has Never Been Told, the expansion of slavery in the first eight decades after American independence drove the evolution and modernization of the United States. In the span of a single lifetime, the South grew from a narrow coastal strip of worn-out tobacco plantations to a continental cotton empire, and the United States grew into a modern, industrial, and capitalist economy. Until the Civil War, Baptist explains, the most important American economic innovations were ways to make slavery ever more profitable. Through forced migration and torture, slave owners extracted continual increases in efficiency from enslaved African Americans. Thus the United States seized control of the world market for cotton, the key raw material of the Industrial Revolution, and became a wealthy nation with global influence.
Told through intimate slave narratives, plantation records, newspapers, and the words of politicians, entrepreneurs, and escaped slaves, The Half Has Never Been Told offers a radical new interpretation of American history. It forces readers to reckon with the violence at the root of American supremacy, but also with the survival and resistance that brought about slavery’s end—and created a culture that sustains America’s deepest dreams of freedom.
Edward E. Baptist is an Associate Professor in the Department of History and House Professor and Dean at the Carl Becker House at Cornell University.
