CWT4R again this week will revisit a series that is geared toward the masculine identified lesbian with returning guest Kofi Adoma and the Jerry Palmer Group of Detroit. The conversation will again explore Identity and labels with a twist of social justice movement within the MIL community. The mission of the Jerry Palmer Group is to combine the talents of self-identified masculine lesbians into a cohesive effort to give validation, support and resources to MILs of all ages in the Detroit metropolitan area, as well as across the country where such support is needed. This grassroots self-reliant group specializes in educating the public about the social and cultural experiences of African American MILs and others of color because this is a population often neglected, stigmatized, and rarely highlighted in national discussions about the LGBT community. Since this is a self-help peer support organization, MILs serve as leaders in proactively managing the programs of this collective group. The JPG strives to collaborate and partner with similar groups such as Brooklyn Boihood, Brown Boi Project, Unity Fellowship Church Movement MIL Ministry, and Butch Voices to encourage participation in the intersected social justice movements where women of color are marginalized and disempowered. The show will feature three of the leadership cadre members, Elder Atiba Cohen-the elder of the group, Dr. Kofi Adoma (pronounced doe-MAH)- founding member, and Kunto Mawusi-the youngest in the group. Their aim is to share with you the purpose of the Jerry Palmer Group and how it was founded, the specific goals and target areas, who all is involved, and the importance of having a group like this exist in Detroit and elsewhere. The focus of the conversation will be on empowerment and visibility of MILs of color and ways to rally up their talents and skills to be of service to their communities, to each other, and to themselves.
Steve Allen is our guest tonight. On January 8, 2008, Stephenville gained national media attention when dozens of residents reported observations of unidentified flying objects (UFOs). Several residents described the crafts as the size of a football field, while others said they were nearly a mile long, similar to the historic Arizona mass sighting of March 13, 1997. Some observers reported military aircraft pursuing the objects. CNN's Larry King covered the news story in the days following the incident, and according to Steve Allen, a private pilot who witnessed the UFO, the object was travelling at a high rate of speed which supposedly reached 3,000 feet in the air. Allen said it was "About a half a mile wide and about a mile long. It was humongous, whatever it was". (wikipedia) The History Channel show UFO Hunters featured a story about the UFO sightings. "In mid January, 2008 reports of a mass UFO sighting over Stephenville, Texas began to make national news. Much like the Phoenix Lights Case of 1997, the mysterious lights appearing in the Texas sky were seen by multiple witnesses including police officers. However, much of the interest was created by the proximity of the sightings to President Bush’s Texas ranch. Although the military initially stated that there were no jets flying in the area that night, they later recanted and stated that a training flight of 10 fighters was actually in the skies. The incident inspired one of the largest MUFON investigations to date and yielded radar information that is considered by many to confirm that an unknown object was flying over Texas. The incident was featured in a number of national news stories and by several television shows". (M. Lauck) The full report of this case is at http://www.ufocasebook.com/pdf/mufonstephenvilleradarreport.pdf
in Self Help
There is a kind of loss that carries a special burden caused by the fact that the subject of the loss disappeared. There is no closure for the person grieving. This happens for grieving people like parents of missing children, families of MIA soldiers, or people with loved ones on Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 to name a few.
The grieving person experiences a roller coaster of emotions between hope and discouragement as they wait for "the disappeared" to come back. This grief has been called "ambiguous loss" and it is a very complex thing to work through. Just giving it a name and learning to embrace the unknown can help.
Benjamin is the author of Out of the Ashes, Healing in the AfterLoss. This book is about profound loss and forging a new path after his loved ones died.
Loss is a part of life, and we all deal it differently. When we give ourselves permission to lean into loss, this unique process of healing finds its own time and rhythm.
There are parts of the Afterloss that only you know and only you can travel, but every one who has experienced loss in one form or another knows the path has many footprints that can lead us into healing. We are not alone.
Your hosts Benjamin Allen and Deborah Brown will share their journeys through grief into healing and create a container for others to explore, define and lean into loss of all kinds.
We meet here and now on the path to the rest of our lives, at the intersection of Loss and Hope ... may we all be blessed by sharing what we have lived and learned.
