Strange Addicitions: A Discussion with Jenn A Nocera

    in Radio

Do you have a strange addiction? For many years, experts believed that only alcohol and powerful drugs were addictive. Recent research has shown that certain pleasurable activities, such as gambling, shopping, and sex, can also hijack the brain. Addictions are chronic and persistent behaviors that we continue to do despite their negative consequences. Although common addictions such as alcoholism and drugs typically come to mind, some people suffer from strange addictive behaviors. You may joke that you’re addicted to chocolate, but what if you really were? What if you couldn’t stop eating chocolate no matter how sick it made you? Or, what if you were addicted to something else such as eating glass, hair pulling, eating dirt, or drinking nail polish? Addiction exerts a powerful influence on the brain that manifests in three distinct ways: craving for the object of addiction, loss of control over its use, and continuing involvement with it despite adverse consequences. For some addictions, the action itself is considered socially acceptable, making it harder to identify and deal with. In fact, some behaviors are so common like watching TV or surfing the Internet, that an addiction might go unnoticed. But where is the line between normal behavior and an addiction? And how can you tell the difference? Life Coach Jenn A. Nocera of Formula for Excellence will set the record straight. After the show, check out After Hours at Jersey Coastal Live for additional information.

Life Coach Jenn A. Nocera on Sympathy, Empathy & Compassion

    in Radio

Buddha says, Compassion is that which makes the heart of the good move at the pain of others. It crushes and destroys the pain of others; thus, it is called compassion. It is called compassion because it shelters and embraces the distressed. Sympathy is the heightened awareness of another’s plight such as I’m sorry for your loss. Empathy is the ability to step into the shoes of another person, attempting to understand their feelings and perspectives. Compassion goes a step further, where you first feel empathy and then a desire to help alleviate the suffering of another. Compassion is used to express the same feeling as empathy, but you have a desire to take action. Over the last decade, neuroscientists have identified an empathy circuit in our brains which, if damaged, can curtail our ability to understand what other people are feeling. Evolutionary biologists have shown that humans are social animals who have naturally evolved to care for each other, like our primate cousins. Psychologists feel that we are primed for empathy by strong attachment relationships in the first two years of life. Empathy is a topic for scientists, business leaders, educaters, and political activists. According to research, empathy is a habit we should cultivate to improve the quality of our own lives. The buzz stems from a revolutionary shift in the science of how we understand human nature. The old view that we are essentially self-interested creatures is being nudged firmly to the side by evidence that we are also wired for empathy, social cooperation, and mutual aid. Join me and Life Coach Jenn A. Nocera as we discuss this topic. After the show, check out After Hours at Jersey Coastal Live.

Jenn A. Nocera & A Humorous Look at Comedy

    in Radio

We all know that laughter is the best medicine. Since the 2 Annual Asbury Park Comedy Festival is coming to town on August 24, this is a good time to talk about why laughter and comedy are essential to our personal well-being. Poet Robert Frost said, “If we couldn't laugh, we would all go insane.” It’s never too late to start seeing the lighter side of life. Having a good sense of humor is an essential social skill. A well executed joke can get you out of a tight spot or help you get away with things that others would not be able to get away with. Humor is often the gateway to friendship and a trait we typically desire in a partner. A sense of humor can be a lifesaver in a relationship. The ability to laugh at one’s self and at life’s challenges allows a person to maintain a proper perspective when dealing with sensitive issues within a relationship. Couples who are playful and teasing can defuse potentially volatile situations with their humor. Sharing the pleasure of humor creates a sense of intimacy and connection between two people, qualities that define solid, successful relationships. But what makes us laugh? For some it's sitcoms like Seinfeld, or classic I Love Lucy. Or maybe you like controversial humor from comedians like Richard Pryor or George Carlin. Ever laugh out loud while reading a book? The only book that ever did that for me was Joseph Heller’s Catch 22. Humor is, of course, subjective, but most of us have something that tickles our funny bone and makes us dissolve into uncontrollable laughter. Join Life Coach Jenn A. Nocera and me for a humorous look at comedy. After the show, please check out After Hours at Jersey Coastal Live for additional information.

Jenn A Nocera: Discussion on "The Power of Now"

    in Radio

Believe in today, your life is now. There is a plaque with these words that I have had for years. Having read this book, these words take on a deeper meaning. According to spiritual teacher and author of The Power of Now, Eckhart Tolle, living fully in the present is the key to happiness and enlightenment. But what does “living in the now” mean? If you have ever thought your life would improve when you got a raise, or won the lottery, or lost weight, then you’re not living in the NOW. Life is a journey, a series of “nows,” not the final and future destination. Tolle says “Nothing has happened in the past; it happened in the Now. Nothing will ever happen in the future; it will happen in the Now.” Human minds are conditioned to think in terms of past, present and future. We are preoccupied with past memory and future anticipation, rather than focusing on the now. The past forms our identity and what has led us to our current life circumstances. We focus on the future because this is where we believe our dreams and hopes will come to fruition – what we imagine to be our salvation, but actually a projection of the mind. We can never actually experience the past or the future. The past is gone, and in reality we experienced it as a sequence of “Nows.” Tolle writes, “Realize deeply that the present moment is all you have. Make the NOW the primary focus of your life.” Please join me and Life Coach Jenn A. Nocera of Formula for Excellence for a discussion of The Power of Now. This New York Times bestseller has been translated into 33 languages, sold over 3 million copies, and is widely regarded as one of the most influential spiritual books of our time. After the show, please check out After Hours at Jersey Coastal Live for additional info.
