Jeff Antoniuk and The Jazz Update
Saxophonist Jeff Antoniuk is internationally respected as a jazz composer and musician. Now living in Annapolis, Maryland, the Canadian born artist appears on numerous recordings and has been consistently well received by critics.
With a master’s degree from the University of North Texas in jazz performance and West African ethnomusicology, Antoniuk spent a decade touring and recording with the Unified Jazz Ensemble. In 2004, he formed his own heavy hitting quartet, the Jazz Update.
The group celebrated the release of their first album together in 2007. Brimming with Antoniuk originals and luscious covers, the CD Here Today quickly climbed the jazz radio charts in the US and Canada and achieved stellar success in the world of high tech music sourced through high speed cable, Internet and broadband.
With the quartet’s 2010 album Brotherhood Antoniuk and company step out with fresh, memorable, and beautifully executed compositions. The progressive jazz disc delivers sophisticated and compelling rhythm, melody and harmony. Its global themes are brought home with depth and humor. Brotherhood began receiving significant airplay and advance sales even before the official release date.
Popular shows at Blues Alley, the Kennedy Center, the Smithsonian and U Street clubs show the Jazz Update to be equally adept at live performance. The group surprises and satisfies wherever they perform.
In another lifetime, I was hosting a terrestrial radio show - and playing a plethora of artists that were centered in the Baltimore/DC area. One of those was recommended to me QUITE strongly. A beloved friend, Johnny Shaw, was attending Towson University. And a teacher there stood out. Jeff Antoniuk. Johnny, being a saxophonist himself, recognized the greatness in another sax man. And HAD to get a CD to me. When I listened to that project, "Here Today", I was beyond impressed with the depth of work and feeling. Jeff was playing with his group, The Jazz Update, and they were COOKING!
That's the reason for Jeff's return visit to "Hybrid Jazz." He has a big event at An die Musik in Baltimore this weekend - with The Jazz Update - and it was important to pass along how cool June 20th is going to be :)
Jeff's roots are different than the average cat. He was born in Edmonton, Canada, and his family moved to Nigeria. There, Jeff's musical journey began. He absorbed his environment while learning how to play classical piano. In his teens, he returned to Canada and picked up a saxophone.
At the University of North Texas, Jeff pursued degrees in Jazz education and West African Ethnomusicology. In school, he was performing and touring. He co-founded the United Jazz Ensemble - his current group later - and is still a member of a fabulous unit that we featured the last time that Jeff visited: the Mars 4-tet.
His accolades as music educator are equal to the respect that he has received as musician, composer and performer. MANY students can attest to the life-changing classes that Jeff has given. His artistic direction for the Maryland Summer Jazz is legendary. We literally could write another five minutes on what our guest has done!
Please welcome Jeff on 6/18 :-D
May "snuck up" on us! Yours truly, at least, was affected by how quickly the calendar changed - and some of us sat bolt upright in bed this morning. Because we realized that a new month was here and we had guests scheduled ;)
THUS, a shortened show today to feature two artists that definitely need this time to shine! The first at two p.m. Eastern - our start time. Romain Collin has been with us on "Hybrid Jazz" - but he had not been a part of this new band, called "The North." The story of how he teamed with Abe Lagrimas, Jr. and Shawn Conley - and where they landed in order to record "Slow Down (This Isn't the Mainland)" - is fascinating! Romain continues to astound with his sensitive and empassioned piano performance. If you know his work, then imagine it combined with double bass and drums in an island setting. You think about that and we'll come back to you later ;)
Jeff Antoniuk has also visited the show - but this time it's to brag about his new group, The MARS 4-Tet. Jeff has been a seasoned saxophonist in our midst - as well as professor and mentor - this side of him - in a beautiful unit of friends who have their OWN seasoning - is a joy to behold. "The Blind Watchmaker" is the name of the new CD - and it features Donato Soviero, Frank Russo and Max Murray - all respected musicians in the extended Washington, D.C. area. Both original songs and delicious re-works of Monk and (wait for it)...Led Zeppelin. Yessir, this is not your Grandmother's Jazz Band - as it says on the liner notes ;)
Romain stops by at two p.m. Eastern - and Jeff has time between classes - so he'll jump into the mix at 3:30. A two-hour show on this day - and we'll be back to three hours next week on our usual days, Tuesday and Thursday!
Thank you for your unwavering support of all that is JAZZ!
