Join me as I speak with Alexis De Veaux: Author • Poet • Activist about her newest work of love, Yabo.
Alexis De Veaux was born and raised in Harlem, the product of two merging streams of black history in New York City-immigrants from the Caribbean on her mother’s side and migrants from North Carolina on her father’s side-who settled in Harlem in the early decades of the twentieth century. The second of eight children, that history was embedded in her mother’s view of life: “You got three strikes against you. You poor, you black, and you female.” But Alexis was drawn to the world of words and books and literature soon became the means by which she re-imagined the world her mother understood.
As an artist and lecturer she has traveled extensively in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, Latin America, Japan, and Europe. Alexis published a second award-winning children’s book, An Enchanted Hair Tale (1987) before moving to Buffalo; where she finished graduate school, earning a doctorate in American Studies, in 1992. A project nearly ten years in the making, her biography of Audre Lorde, Warrior Poet (2004) has been the recipient of several awards, including the Gustavus Meyers Outstanding Book Award (2004), the Lambda Literary Award for Biography (2004), the Hurston/Wright Foundation Legacy Award, Non-fiction (2005). Her work is available in English, Spanish, Dutch, Japanese, and Serbo-Croatian.
With her new work, Yabo, Alexis has returned to her first love: writing fiction.
"It is beginning to dawn on us at this perilous moment that moving to a new level of consciousness is NOT an optional extra but an imperative if we are to survive as a species and safeguard the life of our planet." Dream of the Cosmos by Anne Baring
LivingEden and other shows like it are showing us the way as each step co-creates Eden on earth. This week we will be exploring the spirituality of the rainforests. One book I discovered, " Wisdom From the Rainforest", is an account of a rainforest forest society, the Teduray, written by an Episcopal priest who became a social anthropologist after a stint of missionary work in the Phillipines. The exploration raises important questions about the fundamental principals of how WE live. The Teduray are a nonviolent society, and to learn how different their underlying guiding principles are from our own is both interesting and humbling. One reader commented, " I never saw a better manual for how to live this way than Wisdom from a Rain Forest." I found that aboriginal societies and tribes living in the rainforests all have common guiding principles living a spirituality of non-competition, peace, cooperation, egalitarian, and truly democratic. They also live in harmony with the earth.
Food, timber, raw materials, grazing and gardening land, and medicines are all products of the rainforests which support our life on the planet and rainforests create great biodiversity necessary for us and our planet to survive. We'll explore the spiritual connection with all of these on the show. Please find pictures of the rainforests to look at while on the show. Listen to rainforest CD's. We love you so please, email questions, suggestions, experiences to email@example.com

Louis Zamperini passes away earlier this week, so I can see of no better best of show for the July 4th weekend.
This nation has been served by those who come home, and those who never make it back.
Some have had their stories preserved and celebrated within living memory, some are almost unknown.
This weeks episode will cover both sides of our military experience.
For the first half hour our guest will be best selling author Laura Hillenbrand to talk about her latest book Unbroken; an incredible story of survival of Louie Zamperini - olympic athlete, B-24 Liberator bombardier, survivor of being adrift at sea for months and the as a POW under the Japanese.
Our guest for the second half of the hour will Michael R. Caputo of The Intrepid Project. He is here to talk about 12 Sailors who have been abandoned in a mass grave in a mass grave in Libya.
After dying at sea after a failed mission, when their bodies washed up on the shores of Tripoli on 04 SEP 1804, the bashaw had dogs to devour them as other American prisoners of war looked on. These 13 heroes are buried in two mass graves in Libya. One of those graves is unmarked and underfoot on the Tripoli plaza where Gaddafy held anti-America rallies for decades.
