It's about that time! School time! *All parents are doing a happy dance!* Year round schools are well underway and traditional schools will begin soon, but what should parents do to get prepared? What should first time parents do to get their child (and themselves) ready for Kindergarten? How do you search for and choose quality early education? Want some parenting tips and tools? Is your child starting in an Exceptional or Special Needs classroom and you need help navigating that process? If you said yes to even one of these questions then join us for the month of August for the answers. And call in to get some of your questions answered. We will have educators and parents join us to discuss these topics and more!
Talk to you then!
Host Bob Whelan with guest Jim Bryan
Jim has done it all in the field of strength training and has over 50 years experience. He is a High Intensity Training pioneer and was one of the earliest college strength coaches to use the HIT philosophy way back in the early 70’s. He was truly one of the first college strength coaches period. Jim was also one of the first people to work directly with Arthur Jones in Deland, Florida back in the early 70’s. I will be picking Jims brain tonight for some insight to those colorful days working with Arthur in Deland.
Natural Strength Night is an informative, humorous, sometimes a little raucous, good-time of myth busting and honest training information from the trenches. We strive to help everyone involved with old school strength training (without steroids) to not make some common training mistakes. Along with great information, you'll hear a fair share of steroid bashing, flamingo sightings, breaking goons, iron game history, and honest drug-free training information from various leaders and strength coaches in the field to help you get real results! If your primary training information comes from reading "Muscle & Fiction" magazine we'll help get you straightened out. If you love high-intensity strength training, dinosaur style training and just like lifting heavy weights ... or loved Jack Lalanne, Sandow, Grimek, Peary Rader's old Iron Man magazine, Brad Steiner's articles, Stuart McRobert's Hardgainer, Iron Nation, Osmo Kiiha's The Iron Master, you will love the show.

Acclaimed Author Min’imah Shaheed will discuss Uniting the Family in the 21st Century on Thursday show. Min’imah Shaheed grew up on a farm in Arkansas with her mother, father, and nine siblings who were all sharecroppers. Advancing to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, she went back to school after getting married and rearing seven children. Mrs. Shaheed is also the proud grandmother of ten, and has six great grandchildren. She was a factory worker before going back to school. She was employed there for 10 years and everyday she said that she was going to quit. A thought would bombard her mind, such as: “You’re supposed to be helping human beings and not getting someone rich.” Each day she noticed that she was getting sicker by the moment. This condition progressed over time; eventually causing Mrs. Shaheed to quit her job.
With a thirst for knowledge, at age 40, Mrs. Shaheed went back to school to advance her skills in basic academics. In the process, one of her instructors in her reading class asked her “To get her G.E.D. and go into the college crossover program.” Mrs. Shaheed said, “Oh no, I can’t do college work!” And his reply was, “Oh yes you can.” The math instructor said, “Mrs. Shaheed, you have great potential.” She replied, “Where.” He replied, “You have to bring them out.” So that motivated her to continue with her education. She set her goals by age 50; she would have her G.E.D. Associate and a Bachelor Degrees by age 50. But she accomplished them at 49. Mrs. Shaheed said, “Returning back to school was the best part of her life. She met many wonderful instructors and professors whom she felt helped her build self-confident.She received her Associate Degree in Human Services at Milwaukee Area Technical College and her Bachelors at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee
The traditional school year for preK-12 students spans over 10 months, generally August to May or September to June, in over 80 percent of the public schools within the United States. I had the pleasure of teaching at the first multitrack year-round school in North Carolina, Morrisville Year-Round Elementary School, and learned several important principles about learning that can be applied no matter students' school schedules. Learning is not limited to school; learning is a way of life. I will provide suggestions on using the resources in our local communities to stimulate young scholars academically and ensure that they are immersed in a productive learning environment, whether formally enrolled in school or not.

Chloe and Rayn are old high school friends but a shift occurred the moment Rayn's high school crush chose to be with Chloe. Now, all grown up with a fabulous career, a beautiful family, and a secret she intends to take to her grave, Chloe's beginning to wonder where her friendship with Rayn stands. Secret meetings...surprise visits...mysterious behavior...too close for comfort. Chloe notices all of these obscure occurrences from her high school bestie, leaving her to question whether Rayn is a friend or a foe. This cautionary novella will have you questioning whether your good intentions can be perceived as scandalous and whether or not your friendships are worth holding on to. But most importantly, it will provoke you to re-evaluate what's most important in your life.
Host Cyrus Webb welcomes author John Florio to Conversations LIVE to discuss his literary journey and the book BLIND MOON ALLEY.
Several Bainbridge Island residents have opposed a controversial shopping development planned at High School Road and Highway 305. Protesters are against cutting the 800 trees necessary to build, and have held a boycott pledge, candlelight vigils, demonstrations, and a Bainbridge High School graduate grabbed national headlines by sitting on a platform in an evergreen tree in protest.
Ohio-based developer Visconsi received approval to begin clear cutting the land earlier this month, marking the first step towards construction of a 62,000-square-foot shopping center to include a Bartell Drugs, restaurants, a Key Bank branch, and professional services and health care facilities.
Opponents claim Bainbridge has enough shopping, and the rural nature of the island is being overrun by corporate interests that threaten long term local businesses. Supporters say private property owners who comply with the legal process have the right to develop their land as they please, and more businesses drive competition, more options, and lower prices.
On August 20, the process of cutting the trees began - but the debate continues. Join us as we discuss pros and cons, as well as what happens now.
BOB DARBY AND LYNN EAGLE FEATHER, ADVOCATES FOR THE HOMELESS MENTALLY ILL - Thursdays, 3pmEST ~ Please call to speak on air at (347) 857-3293 for all broadcasts. Darby studied in psychology and theology in graduate school.
Darby has been an advocate for the homeless mentally ill for more than twenty years. He has a B.A. in psychology from Emory University. He is a former employee of Georgia Regional Hospital, Boston State Hospital, and New Hampshire's Hanover-Darthmouth Hospital. In 1994, he co-founded Atlanta Food Not Bombs. Lynn Eagle Feather is an elder in the Lakota Nation. She discusses homelessness, drug and alcohol addiction, its causes and effects among Native Americans and others. Eagle Feather has been a human rights advocate for over 10 years.
Today's episode will center on injustices such as wrongful deaths by police, the Tazing of an 8-year-old Native girl by South Dakota police, and issues that YOU bring to the table. Call in and have your say.
Darby and Eagle Feather explain that people with serious mental illness and addictions are deliberately rendered homeless in the United States of America and deprived of psychiatric and medical health care services. This is unacceptable. Voters should petition elected officials to improve treatment and subsistence opportunities for mentally ill people and those with substance abuse issues.
