  • Welcome K.tothe.A.Y. To The N'Tuned Show

    in Music

    K.tothe.A.Y. is an eclectic East Coast artist whose sound embraces a wide range of elements, from the tight edge of Hip-Hop, to the smooth grooves of RnB and the vibes of reggae / dub. Originally from Brooklyn, New York, it’s easy to see that K.tothe.A.Y. refuses to get stuck in a box when it comes to the possibilities of his song-writing.

    When it comes to hip-hop and RnB, the music scene is absolutely saturated. Music magazines and record labels literally have to dig, every hour, between countless demo and promo emails, to find something truly unique and remarkable. In this day and age, anyone could just get any DAW software (digital audio workstation, an entire recording studio in your laptop) and virtually produce a great sounding backing track, or even a solid vocal performance from the comfort of their bedroom or garage. Some argue that recording technology has been “democratized”, and in a sense, it is true. This is a highly competitive industry and it takes real talent and focus to climb the ranks.

    So many artists have the possibility to create and express themselves at only a fraction of the cost they would have needed to spend just about a decade ago or so. This is great, but like any revolution, it has its downsides. More recordings do not necessarily mean more quality, more care, and more talent. The truth, in most cases, is that unfortunately the majority of the new tracks that are produced this way are just “obstacles”, keeping media and labels away from true gems.

    SILK - EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW - THURS, AUG 27, 2015 - 6:00 pm PST

    in Radio

    Silk is a highly celebrated, R&B quintet who has sold over 5 million records. The group still comprises the original members who debuted in 1992. These gentlemen are Timzo (Timothy Cameron), Jim (Jimmy Gates, Jr.), Big G (Gary Glenn), Lil G (Gary Jenkins) and John John (Johnathen Rasboro). Popular for baby-making ballads and New Jack Swing favorites, Silk is best known for their 1993 pop hit, “Freak Me.” Other hits include “If You”, “Meeting In My Bedroom”, “Girl U For Me”, “Lose Control”, “Hooked On You” and “Don’t Rush”. The group was discovered by Keith Sweat over 20 years ago yet they continue to enjoy longevity in the industry with six studio albums. Currently, Silk is delicately placing the finishing touches on their seventh studio LP while touring the world.
    The group began its embryonic stage in the mid 80’s. Timzo, Jim and John John formed the singing group as the teenagers harmonized while working at McDonald’s. Shortly thereafter, Big G was joined. A then-gospel group, the four would get their big break singing church songs in their manager’s basement during a cookout. Already empowered with unique diamond-smooth harmonies, Silk went in search of a fifth voice and Gary “Lil G” Jenkins was joined to the group. Keith Sweat signed the group to his Keia label and helped to create Silk’s unmistakable sound.
    Sweat co-wrote and produced most of the steamy, sexually suggestive songs for their debut album, Lose Control. Selling two million copies, the album spun three US R&B Top 10 hits, including ‘Freak Me’, which stayed at #1 on the chart for eight weeks and the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks. Silk would go on to release their second album with an eponymous title giving us “I Can Go Deep”, “Hooked On You” and “Don’t Rush”.

    Metalsmith Benchtalk with Metalsmith and Owner of MeanderWorks, Marilyn Brogan

    in Art

    Our guest on Metalsmith Benchtalk on Thursday, August 27th at 3:00 pm PST is metalsmith and jewelry designer Marilyn Brogan, owner of Meader Works, in San Diego, CA.

    Please join us for this live interview and participate by logging onto the chatroom at Blogtalkradio.com or by sending a message to Whaley Studios via Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.

    About Marilyn;

    My name is Marilyn Brogan and I’m the designer, maker and curator of Meander Works, a one-woman studio based in San Diego, California. Meander Works offers delicate, minimalist jewelry made from recycled gold and silver – and soon, a line of engagement rings and wedding bands featuring recycled and traceable diamonds.

    I deeply value and admire good craftsmanship and believe a design is only as good as its execution. Jewelry is an expression of both the maker and the wearer – the quality of the construction is essential to that collaboration. If a ring looks beautiful but it is poorly made, then it may not feel right, fit right, or last. I’m inspired by antique jewelry and love the function of heirlooms. Like the handmade Appalachian quilts passed down to me from my great-grandmother, fine jewelry tells a story across generations. When I finish a piece of jewelry, I see a story that’s just beginning.

    'CrossRoads to Freedom' defines Chris Dair's high-octane and sultry guitar playing and song-writing. Asked whether he played other instruments, "Yeah, I play bass, drums, percussion, harmonica, and some keyboard, and anything else I can get a good sound out of!" Dair, a French resident, brings the extremes of world musical guitar disciplines: Flamenco & the Blues to his musical compostion.   "Blues has this rawness, a simplicity and an undisguised passion in it’s expression of life’s experiences. I play many different styles of music, but my whole core of what I do comes from the blues, whether it be a Fusion Jazz or an Eastern improvisational piece, or a percussion piece it contains elements of the blues that grew up with me." Chris was captivated  by the genius of Jimi Hendrix and his musical university were the performers who filled London's venues, night-clubs and concer halls to inspire and thrill his performance. All these experiences have gifted is his guitar passion remarkable albums and hundreds of studio hours in film and television soundtrack recording.  In an interview with Glen when asked about Music. Chris replied: "It’s like breathing, if I stop, I die. I’ve been playing all my life and I could never give it up, that would be unthinkable. It’s more exciting now for me than it ever was. I wouldn’t know what to do if I didn’t have my music and didn‘t play. For me, what else is there?" Vivian Dair says of her musical experience: 'Melody and lyrics work together to tell a story of what life has given me. I sing with a celtic influence which I couldn't explain until I found that I have an Irish great grandmother, which kind of clarifies that for me. My style includes Psychedelic Blues Rock, Folk Rock, Ballads and so on. I am not influenced by anyone musically, I like all sorts of music, from Aaron Neville to Rammstein !'
